NYC Firehouses to Have Open House Despite Resentment of Many FF's- " We Are Not Circus Clowns"- NY Post

FDNY hosting citywide ‘Open House’ for 150th anniversary

The FDNY is planning to celebrate its 150th anniversary by holding a citywide “Open House,” The Post has learned.
Every firehouse and many EMS stations will open their world-famous doors to the public for two hours, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.
The Bravest in places like Times Square enthusiastically welcome visitors.
“It’s a day we want everybody to see what’s behind the red door,” said Capt. Robert Hauryluck of Engine 54/Ladder 4 at Eighth Avenue and 48th Street, where members routinely chat with awestruck tourists and pose for photos.
“We have an open-door policy as it is,” he said.
But some are fuming at the public invasion.
“All invited! Citizens good, bad or indifferent, terrorists, college grads, high school grads, GED grads, dropouts, criminals . . . you name it you got it,” a firefighter remarked sarcastically on FDNY Rant, an online forum for New York firefighters.
Others voiced resentment at being forced to “entertain” strangers.
“We are not f–king circus clowns,” a probationary firefighter griped.
Engine 54 and other firehouses have hung large banners emblazoned with the FDNY’s 150th-anniversary patch, which depicts Lady Liberty in front of the city skyline, including the Freedom Tower, and the dates 1865 to 2015. “Bravely serving NYC for 150 years!” it proclaims.
Hauryluck said the event will give his firehouse a chance to promote fire safety, give equipment demonstrations and advise those interested in joining the FDNY.
Giveaways will include printed programs marking the anniversary, plastic fire helmets and coloring books for kids, and carbon-monoxide alarms.
