Made infamous by the film, “Gangs of New York” Black Joke Engine Company 33 of the New York Fire Department has long been accused of setting fires during the 1863 Draft Riots. But Associate Professor of Fire Science, Glenn Corbett, along with his late colleague and co-author Donald Cannon, spent years studying this allegation. Tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the NYCFM, Professor Corbett will present their findings and the results are likely to shake up what you have believed until now. Tickets are $10 at the door or can be purchased in advance by visiting: https://www.nycfiremuseum.org/shop/index.cfm?productID=235.

03/25/1990: Happy Land Social Club Fire: A "jilted lover" uses $1 of gasoline to torch his girlfriend's place of employment, the Happy Land Social Club, which has no sprinklers, fire exits, emergency lights or exit signs. The blaze rapidly depletes the supply of oxygen, and 87 people die, most of smoke inhalation.

03/25/1911 Triangle Waist Company Fire: A rag bin fire on the 8th floor of the 10-story Asch Building quickly spreads when workers find the building's standpipe stuck shut and equipped with rotten hose. As the fire turns the 9th and 10th floors into an inferno, burning bodies crash through the sidewalk and ignite the cellar while dozens of others are trampled to death or incinerated when they find the work floor exits locked. 146 people, mainly girls between the ages of 13 and 23, are killed within the first 15 minutes.
