[UPDATE] Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2 Evacuated Following Reports Of Gunfire
[UPDATE BELOW] A chaotic scene unfolded in Brooklyn Bridge park this afternoon—with unconfirmed reports of gunfire on Pier 2—but details are still scant. Spokespersons for the FDNY and NYPD could not immediately confirm the shooting, and it's unclear if anyone was injured. But Brooklyn Heights resident Thomas Hynes tells us via email, "A group of thirty kids were fired upon near Pier 2. Lots of cops and one ambulance on the scene. One young looking kid was in handcuffs."
Hynes, who says he did not witness the shooting but "the people beside me did," also tells us Pier 2 was evacuated. Photos of the scene appear to show police canvassing the area.
We'll update as more information becomes available.
Update 7:15 p.m.: One local resident who would only provide his first name (Adam) says he saw an ambulance at Pier 2, which was closed off behind police tape. Minutes later, he witnessed police ordering a large group of teenagers to leave the park further south. During this dispersal, Adam says he saw officers pepper spray four young men and arrest them on Joralemon Street near Furman, near Pier 5.
"I saw all these cops swarming the place, evacuating the area," Adam says, describing the scene just outside the park on Joralemon. "I didn't see what happened that started it all, but it was chaos, with kids everywhere. All of a sudden people started yelling and four or five cops started macing kids in the face. Another 20-25 kids were yelling and smacking sign posts as police tried to get them to disperse away from the park."
It's unclear why the young men were pepper sprayed and arrested. Adam did not hear any gunshots. The NYPD press office does not yet have any information about the incident.
