SF FF HAS MEDICAL EMERGENCY DURING LIVE FIRE TRAINING

Saturday, April 18, 2015    A San Francisco firefighter is in the hospital after a scary incident during training on Thursday morning. The unidentified veteran firefighter was at the city's Fire Training Facility on Treasure Island, a place that helps firefighters stay ready for all the situations they face.

But just before 11 a.m., the firefighter suffered a medical emergency.

"They were doing a drill in our burn room, and one of the firefighters collapsed. And he was transported to the hospital," said Fire Dept. Spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge.

The burn room is where crews train in putting out controlled flames. They're wearing full gear and breathing apparatus. It can be stressful, even for experienced firefighters.

"It's also very hot in the gear. We haven't had an issue like this in the burn room," added Talmadge.

Cal-OSHA will look into the matter, and fire officials are conducting a safety investigation of the facility.

Friday, April 17, 2015    An young man who suffered third-degree burns to 70 per cent of his body in a childhood accident has faced his fears by becoming a firefighter.

The 29-year-old, from Hawthorne, Nevada, endured 58 operations as well as cruel taunts from bullies who called him Freddy Krueger because of the scars on his face, body and arms.
But he was determined to overcome the harrowing experience that had crippled his confidence for years.

He was engulfed with flames after his brothers filled a bowl with kerosene which was set alight and accidentally knocked on to him

TENN FF HIT IN HEAD BY GIANT CROSS

YouTube Video
Thursday, April 16, 2015   Investigators are working to determine the cause of an early morning fire that gutted the sanctuary of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in West Knoxville on Sunday, hours ahead of the parish's planned Orthodox Easter services.Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran said arson has not been ruled out as the cause, but the majority of the fire damage is in the sanctuary and foyer where prayer candles say lit overnight.

They don't burn often, but when they do legacy churches can hurt or kill firefighters in many ways

One firefighter was briefly taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a nonlife threatening injury when a large crucifix fell on his head, but has since been released, Corcoran said.

The west side of the church, which contains offices and classrooms, is not damaged and church members have been going inside. The sanctuary and foyer section of the church is salvageable, Corcoran said, but currently dangerous to enter.

“By the time I got there, there now was a good size fire going,” she said. “I ran up the stairs and I started kicking doors in. I had a big adrenaline rush, obviously. I kicked in the second-floor door and there was a guy in there with a dog, and his apartment was filled with smoke. I was like, ‘Get out of here. There’s a fire.’ The dog ran right out. The dog didn’t need to be told twice.”

The third floor she found no one, but she began to be overcome by the smoke and crawled on her stomach to the apartment shouting for people... [ more ]

IS THE NFPA LISTENING TO FIREFIGHTERS?

Wednesday, April 15, 2015   It's not hard to find any of us being seemingly annoyed that the NFPA doesn't listen to what FIREFIGHTERS have to say. Actually, they do-and do more than ever-especially since input via the internet makes it easy for NFPA committees to truly represent what FIREFIGHTERS need...not just the few at a table. Surveys like this are a great way to insure that a truly diverse range of input is provided to the NFPA committees...hopefully all fire service related NFPA committees will follow this example regularly.
THIS WILL TAKE YOU 2 MINUTES:
The NFPA committee on Structural Fire Protective Clothing (your bunker gear) is seeking input from firefighters-this wont take more than a moment-so let them know what you think.
