Search and Rescue =(SAR) One of the Oldest and Primary Functions of the U.S. Coast Guard

The SAR school run jointly by the Air Force and the CG was on Governors Island when I worked there.

I went through a course at SAR school in order to write a videotape script about it ( to replace a haphazard slide show series that went with one of the courses).

Typically, alas, the videotape never got made but  I learned a lot  from the course and talking with the head of the school, CDR Meredith, and the AF MSgt Paramedic Bob Wheeler there.

Bob was there after a tour in Vietnam, where he of course fought as well as did the Paramedic work. He was a great guy and had a fantastic sense of humor.

One thing that did spook him though was being the only AF person on the Island and constantly being in the role of "Model Service Representative."

"I feel like I am in a fish bowl," he confided to me once.

I hope he and his wife eventually got their A Frame house in the woods of California and that their great sheep dog lived to see that too.

(By the way, I was not a great fan of the Vietnam War, but I never thought of Bob as anything but a hero. Same thing for my older brother and his friends who were Navy Jet Carrier pilots).
