Tech Reacts To The Demise Of Partial NSA Reform In The Senate
The failure of the Senate to advance NSA reform in the current Congress isn’t too popular with the technology community. The demise of the USA FREEDOM Act — a half-measure at best — in the Senate is another loss for the technology industry, which saw many of its leading companies repeatedly call for the bill’s passage. The FREEDOM Act was aimed at ending the… Read More -

Senator Al Franken, Chairman of the Subcommittee On Privacy, Technology, and the Law, has posted a public letter to Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in which he addresses many of the claims made over the past few days that the company has consistently compromised user privacy as a matter of course. “I am especially troubled because there appears to be evidence of practices inconsistent with… Read More -
Motorola’s New $25 Dongle Helps You Find Your Lost Keys, Unlocks Your Phone
I don’t know what’s going on at Motorola lately, but I dig it. Between launching a Bluetooth headset that looks like something straight out of Her and making temporary tattoos that can unlock your phone, they’ve been getting all sorts of experimental as of late. Their latest random one-off project: a key fob that let you use your keys to find your phone, and vice… Read More -
Researchers Train Computers To Make Up Magic Tricks
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic but what if the technology actually creates magic? A group of researchers at the Queen Mary University of London have trained a computer to create magic tricks using puzzle pieces and cards that are reproducible by humans. This isn’t HAL sawing a woman in half, however. The tricks are very basic mathematical… Read More -
Logitech’s New AnyAngle iPad Case Gives It A Surface-Style Kickstand
Logitech is slowly but surely turning the iPad into a Microsoft Surface – which is good news for those who envy some of the Windows device’s productivity features, but not its software or overall form factor. The new Logitech Keys-To-Go feels a lot like the keyboard included in the Microsoft Type Cover, and now there’s a stand/case called the AnyAngle that essentially mimics… Read More -

Square Register Now Available Globally On Android And iOS
Last week, when Square started pre-orders for its chip-and-PIN-based hardware to upgrade the current mag-stripe equipment, we said it was probably a sign that the company was finally going to turn on more international services into regions like Europe, where the newer system reigns supreme. Looks like that’s just what Square has quietly started to do. Updated Square Register apps in… Read More -

Nest’s CEO Calls Its Tech The “Conscious Home” Because “It’s Not Smarter Than You”
The leader of the “smart home” industry doesn’t want to call it that any more. Nest CEO Tony Fadell says his company uses the term “Conscious Home” because its connected thermostat and smoke alarm create a two-way relationship with users where both help and teach each other. “We call it the conscious home. Smart is overused. It’s not smarter than… Read More -

Sproutkin Ditches Its “Netflix For Kids’ Books” Service, Moves Into Digital Subscriptions
Parents weren’t interested in a “Netflix for Children’s Books” service, apparently. A company called Sproutkin, which launched in spring of 2013 offering shipments of just under a dozen books which parents paid for on a monthly basis but could return at any time for a new batch. The idea was that, in their younger years, kids quickly outgrew their books, and this would… Read More -
Microsoft Updates How The Surface Pro 3 Handles Wi-Fi
Microsoft released a set of updates for its Surface Pro 3 tablet today, including fixes for the tablet-hybrid’s Wi-Fi connectivity, a part of the device’s performance that some have flagged as problematic. I’ve had some Wi-Fi issues with my loaner Surface Pro 3, but haven’t been sure if they stem from Windows 10′s nascency, or the device itself. Paul Thurrott… Read More -

Apple Relabels “Free” Download Buttons On iTunes And Mac App Store To “Get” Following Pressure from EC
Across the iTunes and Mac App Stores today, a minor but also notable change is taking place with regard to how Apple is marketing its iOS and Mac applications. Instead of free apps being labeled as “FREE,” the download button now reads “GET.” The change likely has to do with increased pressures from the European Commission, which this summer, succeeded in forcing Google… Read More -
Searching For Truths In Big, Enormous, Massive Data
We have so much data, mountains and mountains of data. In fact, there’s so much, the name ‘Big Data’ doesn’t even do it justice. Maybe we should call it humongous data or at least enormous data. Yet for all this data, it seems we are lost in those piles of data, no closer to the answers that are supposed to solve our most fundamental business and social… Read More -
Apple Could Include A Re-Branded Beats Music On Every iPhone
Apple might indeed be rolling its Beats Music streaming service into its general iTunes music offerings, and shipping it included across its range of mobile devices, including both iPhones and iPads. If the Financial Time’s sources are correct, the service would then have instant reach to hundreds of millions of potential new customers, giving it a big lead over competitive streaming… Read More -
