As
a break from all the Persian lyricism I've been working on of late,
because literary translators don't always have to take themselves
entirely seriously, and because it's been a while since I paid a visit
to the lovely English tongue of auld lang syne, here's my translation of
a widely known English nursery rhyme into a version of English somewhat
less widely known than that of the original.
HÄ“afdol DÄ“afdol
By A. N. Onymous
Translated by A.Z. Foreman
HÄ“afdol dÄ“afdol sæt on wÄge
HÄ“afdol dÄ“afdol fÄ“ol swÄ trÄge
Ealle cyninges dryhte and wihte
NÄ mihton HÄ“afdol gelÄ«man on rihte.
The Original:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again
