FDNY Appreciation Weekend and Blessing of the Marine Fleet at the Intrepid Museum
FDNY Chaplain Monsignor John Delendick blesses fire boats during the annual Blessing of the Marine Fleet.
The FDNY closed out Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 11 and 12 with a
special celebration – FDNY Appreciation Weekend at the Intrepid Museum,
which included the 14th annual Blessing of the Marine Fleet.
“Please look at this weekend as a way to thank and honor the men and
women who put their lives on the line every day for New York City, and
the sacrifices their families make every day,” President of the
Intrepid Museum Susan Marenoff-Zausner said.
Festivities included Fire and EMS demonstrations and apparatus tours, fire safety education and music throughout the weekend.
The annual event kicked off on Saturday, as FDNY fire boats were
blessed FDNY Chaplain Monsignor John Delendick on Pier 86. They then
gave a celebratory water display for the large crowd of revelers.
“The FDNY has an unwavering commitment to protecting the waterways
of New York City,” First Deputy Commissioner Robert Turner said.
Chief of Department Edward Kilduff added, “To show off our Marine
fleet is special for us. This is a great weekend for the FDNY.”
Among the honored guests was Deputy Commander of the Coast Guard
Sector of New York Jeff Dixon, who said he was honored to attend the
event, noting, “When you have the opportunity to see and speak with
heroes in our midst, you appreciate it.”
