FDNY Graduates 116 New EMTs
The New Graduates Salute
April 24, FDNY graduated 116 new EMTs in a ceremony at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn.
"I have the utmost confidence that each of you will uphold the FDNY's unmatched reputation, and continue to show why the Department is so special," Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said. "When your turn comes to respond, remember to look to your Officers and fellow EMTs for guidance and support - they were once in your shoes."
Chelsea Berry is one of two graduates of the FDNY High School who became EMTs with FDNY today, and her brother, Storm is a senior there. "I'm glad to be a role model for my little brother because he graduates this year - and he can follow in my footsteps," Chelsea said.
The Class Takes the Oath of Geneva
"Very soon, you'll begin using the skills and knowledge you learned at the EMS Academy to provide critical help to New Yorkers in need," Chief of Department James E. Leonard said. "Never forget every single day how hard you worked - and how truly blessed you are - to wear this uniform."
Seven foreign languages are spoken by this diverse group of graduates, including: Cantonese, Creole, Mandarin, Russian, Sign language, and Spanish. These new graduates will be assigned to various units throughout the city.
FDNY EMTs are trained for 10 weeks at the EMS Academy in all aspects of their job as Emergency Medical Technicians: CPR; patient medical and trauma assessments; oxygen and ventilation skills; management of hypotension and fractures; and spinal immobilization and emergency childbirth; and emergency vehicle operation.
