While I found Lenscrafters to be a more efficient and more pleasurable place, I will be going back to SUNY eye care because eventually I will need cataract surgery and this is the place I have chosen for it,
In the meantime, let me tell you that this is a TRAINING place and of course sometimes the students do not do the job they should...but they are checked out by supervisors ( in my experience, the supervisor's did a pretty thorough checkover of the students' work).
Where they fall down is in making up the glasses themselves.
Anyway, Yelp does have reviews--the last one just says his is bad and gives a link to it...I will have to read that one

San Jose, CASure, the looks is not as great and the front desk staff not as courteous and smiley-faced as a private practice or other proper hospital. However - I had a great experience here with the doctor I saw: Dr. Rosine Alianakian. While visiting New York for a vacation with my family - I had a little eyelid infection before flying to NY and my regular eye doctor gave me anti-biotic eye drops and ointment. However my infection really deteriorated by the time I was in NYC. Although I have a great PPO plan, the first few doctor offices that I called refused to give me anything. The lady who answered the phone first gave me an appointment for later in the day but when I asked her if there was something even earlier than that, she gave me an appointment for just half an hour later from when I called!! That was simply awesome!
Actual Appointment: Dr. Alianakian thoroughly checked my eyes and paid a lot of attention to my description of my symptoms. Without knowing my fuill history and literally meeting me for the first time, she was able to diagnose me really quickly - according to her the medicine I was using was causing a reaction in my eye and actually making it worse! She told me to stop using it right away and even gave me a sample eye drop. Within 8 hrs of seeing Dr. Alianakian, my eye recovered almost 80% and back to 100% in 2 days! And seriusly my eyelids and area under the eye was getting more and more swollen before I saw I went to this doctor - the change in my eye and lack of pain so quickly was remarkable. I wish she practiced back in CA - I would drop my current doctor in a jiffy and sign up for Dr. Alianakian instead. I will be forever grateful to this the University Eye Center and Dr. Alianakian. -

Brooklyn, NYI decided to try this place because it's down the street from my office. The student I saw was actually really nice and eager to get the best contact lens fit possible. I really appreciated that. However, the exam was literally 2 hours long. When the doctor arrived to look over everything the student had done (while kind of ignoring me and only addressing the student), we had to do a lot of the exam over again. There was more poking and prodding than I have ever experienced before during an exam.
On top of that, the desk staff consists of some of the most apathetic, expressionless people I have encountered at a workplace. Not only did they visibly not give a shit, they got my order wrong and I had to return another time.
The bottom line is if you have vision insurance and value your time, do not go here. It's evident that it's a teaching facility, not to mention it's a completely depressing environment. -

Brooklyn, NYSpiffy operation. The receptionist could stand a review of proper customer service demeanor but the students and doctors are congenial, professional, knowledgeable and hold no arrogant airs of superiority.
That said, I know this is a school and maybe it was just the set of students I had but there's a lot of rattling off of numbers between the students that suggests you may need to be alarmed about something but you're not quite sure what and they won't say what. And yet I had to ask about what certain specs were in one eye that have been there for a couple of years and found it that they weren't a problem but the extra layer of skin on my bottom eyelid could be curtailed by wearing sunglasses every time I exit the house.
My other complaint is that the eye drops I was given as part of my- very thorough - eye exam left me virtually blind and feeling unbalance and unsure of my steps - and therefore very irritated with the world around me - until early evening. I was told I'd have blurry vision for a couple of hours. The students should ask what the remainder of your day will be like and if you're in a position to be incapacitated.
I'll update this review when I go in for my eye glasses fitting tomorrow which I couldn't do yesterday because I couldn't see well once I left the examination room. -

Union City, NJAs other reviewers have said, this is a place you go to and stay! I've been going to UEC for years and the service has never been better.
I always make my appointments in the later evening and am seen within 10 minutes of checking in.
The students take their time with you and answer any and all questions and then at the end a doctor comes in and evaluates everything they've done. I'm always in and out in an hour (unless looking to buy glasses as well).
And, they usually throw in an extra pair of contacts so you have 2 pair before the ones you've ordered arrived.
Great place and they take just about any insurance! -

You only get two eyes and as an early adopter of the coke bottle glasses, I prize mine like none other. So when it came time to find an eye doctor - and one that took my insurance - I had only a few options that I was willing to venture to during a typical lunch break.
University Eye Center is where the SUNY School of Optometry is located. I was a little hesitant knowing that the majority of my visit would be conducted by a student or a resident - but Pam (the student) was super professional, nice, and just the right amount of chatty. Pam examined my eye super thoroughly. This was the longest exam I've ever had - but its not because she was slow - it was because she ran me through a ton of checks and tests to make sure she was giving me the best exam and prescription possible. Before I left I had a quick check with a regular doctor on staff who confirmed everything Pam said.
I'm not a huge fan of the dispensary where they actually make the glasses, but thats okay. I was just there for the exam anyway.Listed in: Doctor Knows Best -

Brooklyn, NYI've been going to the SUNY University Eye Center for years...First for vision therapy, then for eye exams and glasses, and even to the neurologist once for an evaluation (I'm fine). I can only say that every doctor and student I've met there has been thorough and attentive, and truly interested in each patient's individual circumstances. They're always really informative and excited about what they're learning, and it's a pretty cool environment to be in as a patient. On top of that, the vision therapy significantly improved my eyesight.

Brooklyn, NYI had super high hopes for this place - right next door to work, student doctors (I like the idea of going to a teaching hospital, I feel like I am doing my part and they are always so thorough because they are freaked about messing up everything is always done carefully and with intention), accepts my insurance. I wasn't really disappointed - the two students I met with on both visits were great, very comfortable with the equipment and me and seemed to have terrific bedside (eye side?) manner. The lead docs were great too. Why 4 stars? Minus 1 star for the usually and OVERLY grumpy woman (1 of 2) who work the accounting desk. I imagine that's a tough job, lots of yahoos coming through and "challenging" patients, but seriously... does that really warrant being that snarky and well, downright bitchy to people? The other woman is fine, just hope you get her every time!
But yes, I will go back. Every year. As long as I don't get fired! -
