Staten Island Ferry-- not a bad little excursion for tourists and also locals in the summertime..a little cruise in NY Harbor

I have been on the Staten Island Ferry lots of times, and it was always FUN...

It attracts a lot of tourists who just want the cruise across NY Harbor and  back, with of course magnificent views of lower Manhattan as well as Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty..

I really should look for video of movie clip that has Dick Powell singing love song in 30's musical set aboard the Ferry Deck...yes, here it is

Now on to see if there are reviews of any kind..Oh, Yelp has a lot of really high ratings, which does not surprise me at all...

Free ferry ride that takes you through the river right in front of the Statue, Ellis Island and gives you great views of lower Manhattan on the trip to Staten Island.

No need to pay for a tour.  It's about a thirty minute trip and you must alight once the ferry docks.  If you turn around and take the round trip, give yourself about an hour and a half.

If it is a nice day in the city, I always try to get down to the battery and take the FREE ferry.

Is there such thing as a free meal nowadays? Maybe not. But in NY, there are free ferry rides! It was about a 30 minute ride there to catch a skyline view of Manhattan and to see Statue of Liberty from a distance. For the price of $0, I would say it's a good deal.

If you can, get in the front of the line to go up to the deck of the ferry for a better view and pictures!

Easy for commuters, but also great to see the Statue of Liberty for free if you don't care to pay for a water tour and/or right now while the park is closed and you can't actually visit even *if* you pay for the small boat!

Well-maintained fleet that runs on-time and it's freeeee!

First time on the ferry and really enjoyed it. I think we rode one of the older ones and I loved how big it was and all the original wood and charm. Great views of the bay and skyline. I would love to go back and ride it at sunset or after dark. It's a big crowded wait before boarding, but hey, it's free! Also love that you can buy a beer beforehand and take it with you.

I cannot believe in all the times I have traveled to New York, I have never taken this ferry.  It's free, clean, fun, with outlets to charge your devices and restrooms.  I absolutely adored it.  You can see the Statue of Liberty clearly from it (save money from those over priced tour boats) and the terminal itself is impressively clean (a huge shock coming out of the subway system).  Whether using it for commuting or just looking for a nice free NYC tourist activity, I highly recommend this to anyone.

No one remembers when the ferry was a quarter? I feel old.

Mayor Giuliani did away with the 25-cent fare as one of his PR stunts; I must admit it's a welcome gesture, and makes Staten Island feel a little closer--for better or worse.

The ferry is a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and get amazing pics without a lot of hassle. It's easy to get to the terminal by bus or subway. Even with a large crowd waiting to get on a ferry, I had no problem getting a spot with a great view of everything.

How is this free?? I'm confused. How?

Anyway! Hopped on the ferry for touristy pictures of the Statue of Liberty. I promised my students I'd bring back pictures of her. Ferries leave every half hour. One of the ferries was super old and the ride back, we got to ride on one of the newer ones. What a difference between the two!

You can get great pictures of the financial district if you head to the "front" of the ferry on the way to Manhattan.

A huge plus on the fact that there are restrooms on the ferry. This girl has a small bladder!

This place was an odd experience for for a Michigander tourist. Our first though is that the Statue of Liberty lights may not be back on from Hurricane Sandy. Then we thought, well it's still a boat ride.

The Terminal is a giant boat bus stop, with all the class a giant boat bus stop would have. When stopping in the restroom I noticed a sign. "Absolutely no personal grooming" per NYC Health Department. I thought it was odd until I watch a gentleman notch his eyebrows with a razor blade Vanilla Ice style while waiting for the boat.

One thing I love about NY is how less uptight they are about things such as people having their dogs everywhere and drinking. So there are party stores in the terminal that sell tall boys underneath signs that state "Absolutely no drinking on the Staten Island Ferry". So in short if your a boss and don't wave your beer in every cops face you can drink a tall boy while on the boat, genius!
