Union Square always was a place for discount clothing and I guess still is... saw some other shops for women ( is Filene's Basement still on Union Square?)...
In the olden days, there was of course the big Klein's Department Store where the Zeckendorf Towers are now.
Klein's was one of the very first discount merchandisers and had branches around the NY area...
Talk about stray memories...back around 1970 I met a friend of a friend of mine who was an Italian designer from Milan. He had just done a total design overhaul of the old Klein's store.
It was clever and colorful but didn't help sales any. It is funny, it is just as if some businesses just have their run, like a life span, and at some point it is all over...unless someone can re-invent and re-market it...seems like Sears is another store that is more or less on the way out, and that of course has been around since the late 1800's.....
