Don't ask me why one exit from Central Park is called Warner LeRoy Place, but when you are on the Western edge of the Park you are on a wonderful stretch of real estate that features beautiful big old buildings and often huge apartments--such as the rooms in the Dakota on CPW, where John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived.
Central Park West was sort of like West Egg in "the Great Gatsby" to Fifth Avenue's East Egg, but while the view across the Park to Fifth Avenue is pretty boring, the view over the Park to the West provides great visual entertainment and a lot of imaginative architecture ( within bounds, of course,-- it is dominated by 1920's and 1930's types of Deco and the like).
So you have Rockefellers on Fifth Avenue and John and Yoko on Central Park West...that still sums it up more or less except these distinctions, like all else in NYC, is always changing.
