On our last night in NYC, I was craving for a simple meal. Why did I think Eataly would be it? That place was a zoo!

Walking around the neighborhood near our hotel, we saw a not too busy Lulu & Me. We walked in and immediately felt comfortable with the semi-dimly lit ambiance with tea candles on the dark wooden tables.

Plenty of available seats on a Saturday night in Manhattan can mean one of two things: either the food isn't good or every one else is partying at some trendy spot.  I'm happy to report that the food is TASTY and was actually relieved that this isn't a trendy spot! (A sign I'm getting older?)

You should order these well prepared dishes: tagliolini with lobster and scallops in a light lobster sauce; the sea scallops with fregola, fennel, tomato and limonata. Throw in a lemon shrimp salad while you wait for your entrees.

No frills, mid priced dining in Flatiron where you can actually have a conversation? Total win.
    • $14 Lemon shrimp salad
    • $23 tagliolini with lobster and scallops in a lobster sauce
    • $22 sea scallops with fregola, limonata

Came for dinner and had very mediocre and forgettable food for the price, in my opinion. They do not have small plates/tapas as they are much more bigger plates and pricier than you would expect. We ordered the pork sausage, ricotta, mussels, skirt steak, and the potato fries. Skirt steak came out cold and everything else was nothing special. I would say the best plate was the fries.

Service was also spotty. Definitely would not recommend this place to others.

Food. meatballs and bean spread. Drinks - Manhattan and Chardonnay.  Bartender great, even though a giants and 49ers fan.  Was in the mood to try a couple of dishes and test the cocktails.

The food was very tasty.  Meatballs were really tender and the best choice. The bean dish was more of a dip and tasty but not outstanding.  The bartender was fantastic.  Will be back to try a full meal.

I thought everything was so good and the wait staff was very attentive.
I got the beef skewers - So good
The four chees fritters - Yummy
Skit Steak - Great flavor but I learned that chefs think medium rare is code for medium... I will commit in the future

To answer Nir's question from earlier the answer is 2005.  2005 is when the default tipping in New York City became 20%. It was kind of  big deal but at the end of the day the city council voted and as New Yorkers we must prove that we are better than other people. I believe 15% may still be standard in New Jersey so...

LuLu & Me is a great lunch (and maybe dinner) spot right around the corner from  my office.  I had been scoping it out for months but never ventured in.  Given that today was a cool (for July) I decided to stop in for lunch and a brew.

We decided to stay for lunch and 2 brews.  The LuLu Unfiltered house ale was solid as was the Avery "White Boy" but what will bring me back again are the entrees and appetizers.  For lunch the plates are just the right size to enjoy without needing a nap back at the office.

I had the scallops over risotto and greens and my colleague had the pasta and seafood (which included lobster, bonus).

Definitely a place for a business lunch and easy to get a rez.

Yum!  I really liked everything that we got.  We started off with:  Beef skewers (SO GOOD!) - it comes in 4, and it's a tad spicy.  I personally love spicy, but it's not explicitly stated that it has a slight to it.  The pork sausage was also really good. It comes in one link.  It's kinda of small to be sharing though :/  The polpettini (meatballs - 3 pcs) were great and is definitely a must try.  OH!  And the rosemary fries with basil mayo? YYUUUUMMMMM!!!!!

For main courses, the Tagliolini (scallops, lobster, and hake in lobster sauce) with fettuccine noodles were awesome.  The sauce was creamy, yet light.  A bit of an oxymoron, but they made it work!  Mussels were amazing.  This is the first mussel dish where every mussel was open AND had a mussel in it.  My cousin also got mussels and it was the same thing.  So the must really sift through the mussels to make sure everything is perfect.  Every other time I got mussels, there would be a mussel shut, or an empty shell.  OK... maybe the organism got detached from the shell and fell into the broth.  NOPE.  The skirt steak and ribeye was also very tasty!  Grade A beef.

Service?  Excellent.  Friendly, timely, attentive, and helpful.  It can't really get better than that.
    • Beef skewers with a slight kick - yum
    • Sausage with polenta
    • 100% mussels-YUM!!

My sister and I were walking past after a day of shopping and stopped for an early dinner.  We split the egg and zucchini sandwich, which was SOO good (and the fries were so perfectly seasoned that even though I'm usually a dipper, I ate them plain).  We also shared the fettucini with porcini and shiitake mushrooms, which was also delicious.  Drinks were strong.  Service was a little slow for being one of the only tables, but I'd definitely go back.

Happy hour and lunch here have been wonderful experiences. The happy hours here are always enjoyable for me and my work friends. It's our go to place when we don't feel like paying 15 bucks for a great drink. The dark and stormy cocktail is amazing as well as the chocolate martinis. Mix them together and you're in for a birthday you most likely won't remember.

The bartender loved our inappropriate conversation during one happy hour here that he decided to give us free rounds of shots. Hey, it might just happen to you too if you frequent enough and talk about things others aren't as daring to. The food is absolutely delicious and the wait staff is super friendly and attentive.

Kind of weird that a restaurant labeled as  a "good date night" closes their kitchen at 10pm on a Saturday, but anyway...

Rolled up here on a rainy Saturday night after going to the NYC Craft Beer festival at the Armory.  They let us place a last minute dinner order since it was almost 10pm.  The bar was pretty empty so 3 of us sat there.  The food came out really fast since they all probably wanted to go home.  It was decent but not memorable.  The drinks were well made and the bartender had some good stories to tell.  Would want to come back and give a full, non-rushed dinner a try.

Great place! I came here with a friend for an early dinner before seeing a jazz performance. I had a delicious piece of fish and she had a tasty steak. Our waitress was very attentive and filled our water glasses every chance she got - I don't think our glasses ever got past the midway point before being refilled!  Very clean, modern decor, friendly service and delicious food at reasonable prices for NYC. Can't complain.

Visited LuLu & Me for the first time last night.   What a find!  This is a very cool little spot.  Nicely decorated with a very warm vibe. The staff is super friendly and genuine. So much so that you will have random, interesting conversations (and I mean real conversations, not idle chit chat).  We had a great time talking with our server, Young!

Interesting and creative menu with a lot of variety. In fact it is truly difficult to decide what to have!  You'll want to try everything. Between the two of us we had five different items and all were excellent.  Well thought out selection of wine and beer as well.

This is a must if you're looking for a superb casual dining experience!  Don't miss it!  We won't!

I felt like I've just visited "Mother Russia" without hopping on a train to Brighton Beach!!! Now anyone can have that unique feeling just wandering at the 5th ave and doing the regular "window shopping". I decided to stop by Starbucks for my "wake up" latte...but what really woke me up is that red lettered sign - "GRAND OPENING" and russian themed decorated display. "Can't be...", - I thought to myself. Little Russia in the heart of Manhattan??? Still pinching myself, I walked in. I was really impressed and felt like a kid in the candy store. All those gorgeous nesting dolls, porcelain, ushankas, woolen shawls, stuff for russian Banya, toys...and lots of books!!! From Leo Tolstoy to modern authors. I think the shop assistants thought I was crazy, when I spent nearly an hour looking through the books and skim reading some of them:). I ended up buying "Cheburashka"!!! OMG, it is such a hillarious toy!!! And it speaks in russian if you press its paw:)). It made my day. Definitely, will come back!!! I've noticed a lot of russian style christmas ornaments, so now I have an idea, what my tree is gonna look like this year:)!

Congratulations on opening a new store in the tourist district of Manhattan!  I wish you a lot of success!  The store has a lot of interesting things for different age groups from kids toys to fine and elegant china.  You can find there everything from souvenirs to birthday gifts. You will learn a lot about Russia just by looking at the shelves and talking to the experienced sales people.  So, you can combine you shopping experience with getting a new knowledge about Russian culture.

Japanese Nuclear Leakage Continues

Reports from Japan show that many babies in an area believed to have been partially contaminated are now being born with birth defects, particularly one which affects the delevopment of bones in the hand..

Of course, there have been a lot of cases of thyroid cancer reported among teenagers who lived within a wide area that had been contaminated....which is alarming, because it usually takes years for that kind  cancer to occur after exposure to heightened levels of radiation ( The Russians have never released all the medical data from people affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe, but remember how radiation spread and vegetables in Italy had to be thrown away and lambs in Wales had to be slaughtered and disposed of as contaminated from the fallout back then).

In fact, significant levels of radiation swooped out of Russia into Oregon in the U.S. not long after the Chernobyl horror happened.

TEPCO 'finds crack' in Fukushima’s water tank after huge sea leak

Workers from Japan’s TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi plant have located a crack in the bottom of a tank that may have leaked 300 tons of radioactive water in August, Japanese media reports. This comes as the company seeks to reopen another nuclear plant.

The water that was being pumped into the tank at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant could have caused the existing gap to expand and likely led to the massive leak, TV channel NHK reported. The leak which sparked the crisis came from one of the 1,000 above-ground storage tanks built inside the plant by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). The company promised to continue their investigations.

Moreover, silt fences intended to prevent soil containing radioactive substances from slipping into the ocean were found to be damaged on Thursday. The damage was found close to the buildings of the fifth and sixth units, NHK reported. Both were on cold shutdown for planned maintenance, thereby managing to avoid meltdowns.

A TEPCO spokesman said that the area was not a danger zone. “Radiation levels in this area's seawater are very low, and no contaminated water tanks are placed near reactors 5 and 6,” he told AFP.

The fence is also designed to prevent radioactive material emerging from damaged units 1, 2, 3 and 4, where another separate fence is set up. It was damaged in April by rough waves and bad weather.

All of Japan’s 50 nuclear reactors were shut down following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami which wreaked havoc at Fukushima and sparked a nuclear crisis in which meltdowns occurred in three reactors.  It was considered to be the world’s worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

Following the devastation, the public outcry over the persistent usage of nuclear power in Japan has prompted protests, drawing thousands in some cases.

Some rallies have drawn links and comparisons to the nuclear bombs at Hisoshima and Nagasaki, dropped by the US on Japan in 1945, at the end of World War II. These have been dismissed by officials as distasteful, and perhaps even histrionic.

“Our position, and this is a position we can never compromise on, is that nuclear weapons are an absolute evil,” Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui said in an impassioned interview with AP at City Hall. “I oppose connecting the two, simply because they both involve radiation.”
The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs killed some 140,000 people, and while nobody has yet been known to die from exposure to the Fukushima radiation, the disaster, which involved a massive earthquake and tsunami, caused the deaths of nearly 20,000 people.

Additionally, the long-term health toll is yet to be seen. The Japanese government has already detected 44 confirmed and suspected cases of thyroid cancer among 217,000 children (aged 18 and under) who have been checked in Fukushima.

Despite the protests and opposition, there are still plans in place to restart plants.

On Thursday, TEPCO received approval to restart the Kashiwazaki Kariwa plant in the western Niigata prefecture, which has been central to the company’s turnaround plans following the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

The governor of the prefecture said that he was allowing the utility to apply for safety approval, despite previous statements declaring that TEPCO was not fit to run a nuclear plant.

“The Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant may be halted but it is a living facility, and safety must be ensured at the plant,”
Governor Hirohiko Izumida said in a statement faxed to Reuters. It was released a day after a well-publicized appeal from the president of TEPCO.

However, the final judgment on whether getting the plant will be back up and running again is still being withheld.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned to power last year, and is a firm proponent of nuclear power. It is thought that under his watch, idled reactors may be restarted again. However, TEPCO itself is behind schedule with its own plans, and since the disaster has had to deal with the knowledge that radioactive water has been leaking into the Pacific Ocean ever since the accident.

Abe has told TEPCO to outline a timeframe for handling the leaks. TEPCO is currently preparing to test a new filtration system, beginning Friday. The company’s plans to install more efficient cleaners have been challenged by the NHK channel.

While the company would like to increase capacity for cleaning from 500 tons of water per day to 1,500 tons per day, the system is apparently not capable of removing radioactive tritium from contaminated water.
