New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world - but for the past two weeks it has been even more cosmopolitan than usual.
The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues attracted people from almost every continent. Many of them had never left their country before.
The BBC spent time with a group including a Maori, a Masai and a Sioux as well as a Mororo from Cameroon and a Khoisan from South Africa.
They discussed their shared concerns over how to protect their lands and traditions - and held late-night sessions preparing to deliver speeches at the UN.
Produced by the BBC's Anna Bressanin
