We may only be in April but as the ground dries out the risk of grass fires increases. These pictures show our crews tackling blazes yesterday at Bostall Heath near Abbey Wood and at allotments in East Ham where burning bonfire embers ignited a compost heap. Yesterday our firefighters were called to a major building collapse in central London. The six storey block on Portugal Street in Aldwych was under refurbishment and collapsed between its fifth and second floors. Two fire engines and three fire rescue units attended and crews gave first aid to an injured man on the scene until London Ambulance Service arrived. Around 200 people were evacuated from the area. Sylvester Stallone's bread ad became toast in Ladywell this week. It was Rocky for a time with some Judge Dread but The Specialists used their loaf and got it under control with no injuries. Puns welcomed.

The dangers facing smokers who dispose of their smoking materials carelessly became all-too-obvious for two young men in South Kensington. They were relaxing in their flat on Old Brompton Road when a fire began and triggered the smoke alarm.
One of them left the second floor flat and flagged down a passing police car. Police officers led the other person to safety and put the small fire out. Fire investigators found ample evidence of smoking in the flat and if you smoke too, make sure you put it out - right out.
