The dangers facing smokers who dispose of their smoking materials carelessly became all-too-obvious for two young men in South Kensington. They were relaxing in their flat on Old Brompton Road when a fire began and triggered the smoke alarm.
One of them left the second floor flat and flagged down a passing police car. Police officers led the other person to safety and put the small fire out. Fire investigators found ample evidence of smoking in the flat and if you smoke too, make sure you put it out - right out.

As the weather warms up it might be tempting to cool down with a quick dip, but you could end up getting quite a shock.
In the last three years our crews have attended 136 incidents involving people in water and carried out 92 rescues. Sadly there have also been 12 water related fatalities.
To mark the first ever Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Week, we will be highlighting the hidden risks of rivers, lakes and canals.

Firefighters tackled a blaze in Abbey Wood that could seen from miles away. Thankfully no one was injured but two static caravans were destroyed http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/LatestIncidentsContainer_12Ap…
On Thursday crews were called to this Harrow flat fire. Thankfully no-one was injured but it left the living room damaged and the rest of the flat smoke logged. Our fire investigators believe the fire was caused when an oil lamp in a religious shrine set light to papers nearby. If you're using candles, incense or oil burners make sure they're properly extinguished when you’re not using them and are not left unattended. It’s the Oxford-Cambridge boat race today, but the university teams aren’t the only ones who have been putting in the hours on rowing machines.
Bromley red watch firefighters will take on their own Thames based challenge next Saturday when they “Row the Thames” to raise money in honour of two-year-old Ruby Young, who is suffering from a rare form of childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma.
The crew will row 346km – the length of the River Thames, on six rowing machines at the I...

We've completed our initial assessment and believe that the fire in Holborn started last week due to an electrical fault in the Victorian tunnels running underneath the Kingsway. This technically difficult fire shows just how complex London can be and how unseen risks underneath the capital can significantly affect businesses, residents and the day to day running of parts of the Capital. Thank you for you patience and your kind words to our crews. http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/…/LatestNewsReleases_holbornf…

A lorry crashed into a railway bridge in Dulwich this morning, narrowly missing an oncoming train full of passengers.
Thankfully the quick reacting train driver spotted the lorry and its 'grabber', which had landed on the track, and jumped on the emergency brakes avoiding a collision.
No-one was injured and the 89 passengers were safely transferred onto another train.

An unattended candle or incense stick started the fire that caused this damage to a flat in North Woolwich on Saturday. Four fire engines and 21 firefighters attended the blaze and fortunately no-one was injured.
Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire in the home and they should never be left unattended. They should always be kept away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, furniture or clothes.

A pet dog has his tail between his legs after he started a fire that could have burnt the house down on Chandler Way in Peckham.
The sorry tale is a reminder for owners to keep an eye on their pets because you never know what they might get up to next. In the case of Leo, a Boxer/Staffordshire cross, it was up to no good at all.....
Fire investigators believe Leo must have started the fire in the kitchen when the family were out. He jumped up and touched a knob on the front ...

Happy Easter. Thank you very much for your patience while we tackled the Holborn fire this week. It was technically difficult incident to manage and our crews appreciate the number of kind words we've been sent. We are now investigating the cause of the blaze http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/LatestIncidentsContainer_0103…
Congratulations to Tower Hamlets Fire Cadets who became the first unit to graduate this year.
The cadets enjoyed a pass out ceremony at Millwall fire station earlier this week, where they showed off some of the practical skills they had learnt by demonstrating a drill in front of their family and friends.

It's been a busy couple of days for our crews who have done a great job at two big incidents.
As well as the incident in Holborn yesterday, crews also tackled a blaze at an industrial unit in Park Royal. Fifteen fire engines and over 100 firefighters were called to the blaze on Western Road.
Crews work very hard through the night to tackle the fire and fortunately there were no injuries, though most of the building was destroyed.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers remain at the scene of the cable tunnel fire on Kingsway in Holborn.
There remains a fire in the sub surface tunnel which involves a gas leak that the gas authorities are attempting to isolate. It’s a technically difficult and unusual incident to tackle as it’s underground.

It was decided that the boundary needed to be extended to include Middlesex, Croydon, East and West Ham and 83 other boroughs. http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/BoundaryChangesToTheGLC.asp

On this day in 2006, 12 fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a blaze that ripped through a health club on Riverside Drive in Chiswick during the early hours of the morning. Thankfully there were no casualties but the building was left gutted. Do you remember this fire? Maybe you lived nearby or were a firefighter called onto the job?

Granting the wishes of children is something our firefighters love to do and Whitechapel and Millwall blue watch recently waved their magic wand for four-year-old James Kelly.
His wish was requested through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity that grants wishes to children fighting life-threatening conditions. James was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour last July and has had chemotherapy treatment and surgery to remove his right kidney. He continues to have regular check-ups to ...
