Photos from the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal
Tragedy struck the world when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Kathmandu, Nepal earlier this morning. Over a 1000 people have died in the disaster that turned buildings into rubble and leveled the city’s 200-foot tall Dharahara Tower to the ground. The quake was so strong it caused an avalanche on Mount Everest and was…
Paratroopers fill the sky in awesome photo
Here’s a really cool photo showing US Army and British paratroopers jumping out of C-130J Super Hercules airplanes in a line at Fort Bragg. It was the largest jump exercise in 20 years at Fort Bragg and there are so many paratroopers filling the sky that it looks like a floating human wall (okay, a fence?) has been…
Simple robot arm is hilariously efficient at packing up bolts in a box
This robot is so dumb and goofy but also very, very decent at its very, very simple job: it packs up bolts in such perfect alternating orientation that it would make any factory worker jealous. In fact, with the soundtrack that the video is set to, I almost wish that I will come back as this robot arm in my next life.
Beautiful short film uses alchemy to tell a touching story about life
The Alchemist’s Letter by Carlos Stevens is a beautifully animated short film about a father’s letter to his son. It’s imaginative and touching and worth the watch just for the visuals alone. The story progresses through a machine that turns memories into gold and you get to see wonderful little worlds pop up in the…
Meteor streaks across the sky and leaves a trail in the shape of a Z
Photographer Sam Cornwell captured this awesome meteor streaking across the sky and discovered that it left a gnarly smoke trail in the shape of a Z before it disappeared. You can see the photos he took of the fireball of a meteor here.
Man of Steel restored in color looks so much better than the original
Man of Steel was mostly fine but one huge problem with the movie was that it was just too dark. It embarrassingly cribbed its visual style off of Nolan’s Batman trilogy and that dark tone just doesn’t match up well with Superman. Visual Lab decided to restore the color in the film and it looks so much better.
Video: Terrified fish hides as a gang of sharks hunt right on top of it
This clip from Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s 2012 film Planet Ocean shows a parrotfish pulling one of the oldest tricks in the book to get away from sharks: it hides right next to coral while staying impossibly still as the sharks just swim right by it, over it and next to it while completely missing it. It’s the silly scene…
Awesome video shows unmanned X-47B drone refueling in the air
Earlier this week, the badass X-47B drone became the first ever unmanned aircraft to refuel while in the air. Think about how cool this is, the drone has to meet the KC-707 tanker plane in the air, position itself perfectly to snatch onto the fuel line and then gas itself up with no one on board. So freaking cool.
Staring into the eyes of these bugs is like staring into an alien's soul
I didn’t expect it to be, but staring straight into the eyes of these fascinating bugs is chilling. The clear, close up shots of their heads and the incredible, foreign detail of their eyes and bodies makes them seem like they’re not a part of this world. I mean, you could totally convince me that these are aliens.
The most amazing Hubble Space Telescope fly-through yet defies belief
If space traveling the universe had a scenic route, this would be it. It’s a 3D fly-through of the nebula Gum 29 with the stunning star cluster Westerlund 2 in the middle and it’s absolutely gorgeous. The image was taken by the Hubble and shown off for its 25th anniversary. It’s the stuff of dreams.
Watching realistic CGI giraffes dive into a pool is pure ridiculous fun
This is completely absurd but Nicolas Deveaux’s 5 Mètres 80 is so fun that it doesn’t really matter. A group of giraffes raid a pool and start jumping off the high dive while doing tricks. It’s all CGI but the giraffes look so realistic that I can’t help but imagine the alternate reality that this is happening…
Cool photo of a paratrooper makes it look like he's surfing an airplane
The angle of this photo of a paratrooper making a jump off a C-130 airplane is so perfect that it makes it seem like the soldier is using the Hercules aircraft as a surfboard of sorts. Obviously, he’s not standing on the plane (it’s just our perspective fooling us, or just me) but man, riding an airplane while outside…
Swimming with a million fish looks like being in a teleportation tunnel
I’m not exactly sure I know what a teleportation tunnel actually is but I’d imagine it would look a lot like this. This being swimming with a million silverside fish in the ocean. It’s beautiful, like traveling through organic warp speed or being a part of a swarm from a sci-fi movie that’s about to swallow you or…
Short film animates people's stories about their first time
Jonas Odell asked four different people about their first time having sex and then animated their stories in this wonderfully intimate short film. Some of the stories can get funny and familiar, other are touching and enlightening while another unfortunately is really sad. But even though the stories all very…
Who wins when a fire hose and a flamethrower shoot at each other?
Rock, paper, scissors. Paper beats rock, rock beats scissors, scissor beats paper. How do those holiest of rules apply to fire and water? Well, let’s blast a water hose at a flame thrower while the flame thrower is firing off at the water hose to find out. Guess who’s the winner?
Massive volcano erupts in Chile creating enormous volcanic ash cloud
This is terrifying. Chile’s Calbuco volcano erupted recently in an intimidatingly massive explosion that created a giant volcanic ash cloud. Actually, giant doesn’t even begin to describe it. It’s the first eruption for the volcano in over 4 decades and has caused 1500 people to evacuate the area.
A closer look at the new Batmobile in Batman vs Superman
If you want to get a closer look at the new black dune buggy that Ben Affleck’s stunt guy will be driving in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie, here’s some up close footage from JoBlo Movie Trailers. You get up close shots of the parts and a glimpse of the weaponry. It’s like a cross between the Tumbler and…
Video: How processed deli meat is made
Though it might look like some sort of condom testing or water balloon making, what you’re actually looking at is bologna being made. The natural casing gets fitted over a stuffing horn and filled with a meat mixture of beef, pork and seasoning. It’s then smacked with a spike and smoked until it comes out looking…
What an insane 343x camera zoom would look like zooming in from 3 miles
In the future, we might be able to zoom in from an impossible far off distance and see a target like some insane sniper. Daniel Taylor made this simulation that shows what an extreme 343x super ridiculous zoom would look like and it’s crazy to imagine that this could be real.
It's No Hoverboard, But This Levitating Light Bulb Is Still a Neat Trick
Most of us have come to terms with the fact that we won’t be floating to work on a hoverboard anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean our lives have to be completely devoid of levitation. Not when Simon Morris is Kickstarting an amazing floating light bulb that actually lights up while it hovers above its base.
