Calbuco, a stratovolcano in southern Chile, began erupting yesterday at 7pm local time. First spewing massive ash clouds then, at 10pm, erupting explosively as its fragile structure collapsed inwards. Here’s all the stunning imagery and video; we’ll keep it updated as this develops.   Hmmm...if we can trigger a couple more of these, we’d solve that global warming problem. What could possibly go wrong?

    Well volcanoes do spew ash into the atmosphere, but they also spew a lot of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.

    The cooling effects of all that ash are relatively temporary though. Even the largest volcanic eruptions only affect climate for a couple of years.

    Depends on the eruption. In this one, the lightning is caused by the static generated from the ash (and other stuff!). In weather terms, its called a dirty thunderstorm.

  Beautiful sunsets in weeks to come. 

  I was 8 when Mt Saint Helens erupted. I remember the video of the smoke pouring out on TV. I remember aftermath fly overs of trees blown down, but I especially remember how blood-red the sunsets were. We had a neighbor to the east whose house was white but for 2-3 nights, it was almost crimson.
