CHIEF GLENN GAINES RIP "SUCH A GOOD GUY"

Monday, April 13, 2015   Like everyone that heard the news yesterday, we were shocked to hear that Chief Glenn Gaines (former Fairfax County, Virginia Fire Chief) and current Deputy United States Fire Administrator passed away very suddenly. He was outside mowing his lawn when he went down. Neighbors saw him and immediately called 9-1-1, and started CPR. Loudoun County Fire Rescue responded forthwith and attempted advanced life support measures but in spite of all these efforts, Glenn had passed away.

It was such a privilege to be friends with this true gentleman, who was an absolute firefighters firefighter. We worked as fire service neighbors but also when he became involved at the Federal level. We also spent some social time together as well. This was one good guy.

He was definitely a "bridger" between "old school" and "new school". I'm not sure that "bridger" is a word-but he was able to respect and represent the old ways-wh... [ more ]

FIREFIGHTER CLOSE CALL-RARE DISEASE

Monday, April 13, 2015   Firefighters pride themselves on not only answering rescue calls and saving lives, but having each other’s backs. That bond between Captain Jack Gangwish and Engineer Jason Sornson is especially strong.“We’ve been best friends for a long time,” said Gangwish.

“He’s one of the toughest guys I know,” said Sornson.

So in December, when Gangwish became so ill he was admitted to a Council Bluffs hospital, his fellow firefighters knew he was in bad shape.

“We just thought it was just a bad cold that I had,” Gangwish told KETV’s Brandi Petersen. He went to the doctor and started on medication, but he kept getting worse.

“I woke up at like 4:30 in the morning and I couldn't even breathe, couldn't hardly walk,” said Gangwish. His wife rushed him to an emergency room, but doctors couldn’t determine why Gangwish was so sick.

“I didn’t know if I was going to make it through the night a couple of nights,” s... [ more ]

FIREHOUSE MOLD: Scranton should have air-test results of closed firehouse next week

Sunday, April 12, 2015   Mold closed Scranton’s East Mountain fire station at least into the middle of next week if air-quality test results come back satisfactory. In the meantime, the department will conduct roving fire-engine patrols in that neighborhood for quick responses there if needed, Fire Chief Patrick DeSarno said Friday. The firehouse was closed Thursday morning because of a mold problem, city Councilman Joe Wechsler announced at council’s meeting Thursday night.

Two firefighters complained Thursday morning about headaches and the station was closed as a precaution until air testing could be done, the chief said Friday. Results of tests conducted Friday morning should be received by Wednesday, he said.

East Mountain’s Engine 10 now is operating out of the downtown Fire Department headquarters Engine 4, he said.

The East Mountain station has suffered from “years of neglect ... (and) ongoing problems from a leaky roof,” the chief has said. Roof repairs als... [ more ]

Hartford Fire Dept. Cited For 'Serious' Safety Violations

Saturday, April 11, 2015   The Hartford fire department has been cited for five "serious" violations by state Department of Labor officials investigating the fire that claimed the life of firefighter Kevin Bell.

The violations issued by Conn-OSHA are equipment-related to individual firefighters from engine Company 16, which Bell belonged to, that participated in trying to put out the Oct. 7 fire at a home on Blue Hills Avenue. Bell died and a second firefighter was seriously injured.

The OSHA violations include:

--The department did not issue, and require the use of protective fire/heat resistant hoods by firefighters responding to the blaze.

--All firefighters had not received required medical evaluations prior to annual fitness testing.

MAN FIRES GUN NEAR FIREFIGHTERS IN STANDOFF WITH COPS

Saturday, April 11, 2015    An Onondaga Nation man wanted on multiple charges is accused of becoming involved in a standoff with police in March and firing a handgun near first responders at a fire earlier this week. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said Friday night that 26-year-old Corey Redmond should be considered "armed and dangerous" and that the public should not approach him.

Redmond is wanted on warrants for second-degree criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, third-degree menacing and third-degree fleeing an officer. The sheriff's office said he is also wanted for reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and several vehicle and traffic offenses.

On March 28 sheriff's deputies became embroiled in a 6-hour-long standoff with Redmond at a house on the South Side of Syracuse.

A deputy had been trying to arrest Redmond at 407 Clarence Ave. for misdemeanors related to a traffic incident the day before, the sheriff's office said. But Redmond fled b... [ more ]

AS FIREFIGHTERS, WE MUST TAKE RISKS

Saturday, April 11, 2015    Today is the 9th anniversary of the Line of Duty Death of New Jersey Firefighter/Foreman Kevin Apuzzio...who gave his life while attempting to save the life of a trapped civilian.

There are times where we take risks and there is no reason to do what we did...and it was obvious even beforehand. Sometimes we find ourselves so off the scale of doing something so ridiculous (sometimes just 'cause we 'wanna) that we are just thankful we got away with it-or didn't. We freelance, we don't size-up, we ignore officers orders-it happens.

However, there are times where we absolutely must do what we are expected to do-when the conditions indicate that we, the FIREFIGHTERS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, must do whatever it takes, to take the risk to do the right thing in helping people who count us as their last resort. That happens too. While many absolutely are, NOT EVERY LODD is avoidable.
