Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and Chief of Department James E. Leonard welcomed Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, to FDNY Headquarters on April 3. The group discussed a variety of topics, including training for emergency preparedness and complex emergency response. DHS funding supported the FDNY’s response to potential cases of Ebola in New York City by funding protective personal equipment (PPE), as well as advanced training for complex emergencies like pandemics, building collapses, train or subway derailments, and natural disasters.

  • Jon Coles We've seen the fires created in 55 gallon drums, in the middle of the street, with flames leaping up twenty-five feet or more. Please, please, please place the drum far away from overhead wires and overhanging tree branches. It's understood that you must clean the house of all yeast, and burn it outside, but please stay safe.

On the afternoon of Thursday, March 26th, an explosion occurred in the East Village that affected four buildings along 2nd Avenue. While the investigation into what caused the incident is ongoing, FDNY units remain operating on-scene.
