NYPD Community Council Recognizes Members from Engine Company 297 and Ladder Company 130 for Their Bravery

On April 8, members of Engine Company 297 and Ladder Company 130, in Queens, received an award from the NYPD 109th Precinct Community Council at the NYPD Training Academy for their actions on January 4.
That morning, FDNY members responded to reports of a car crash and FDNY members found an adult male seemingly unconscious at the wheel of one of the cars. As Lt. Thomas Clancy of Engine Company 297 approached the vehicle, the man awoke. After being removed and evaluated by EMS, the patient began acting strangely.
Firefighter Wayne Young, a 12-year veteran of FDNY, with Engine Company 297 immediately knew that something was wrong.

“The guy kept on trying to get back into the vehicle รข€“ so I knew something was up,” said Young, who served as a Police Officer with NYPD for more than three years after serving three years in the United States Army, before becoming a firefighter with FDNY. “And when we wouldn’t let him back into the car because it was a crime scene after the accident, he just took-off running.”
That only moments ago this man had been apparently injured and unconscious, but now was running confirmed to the members that something was amiss, and they gave chase.
Once Firefighter Young caught the man, the members of Engine Company 297 and Ladder Company 130 remained securing the patient and the scene with EMS until Police Officers from the 109th Precinct arrived. The Police Officers found a loaded handgun and bag of pills in the car.
