Every once in a while, I see some doorway like this and get a kick out of how much some modern architects-- in particular Frank Lloyd Wright---would have rolled their eyes and suppressed the desire to attack it with a jackhammer.
To Wright and many others, this older apartment building in Murray Hill in Manhattan is showing signs of feudal imagery, signifying-- well, feudal attitudes. (As a Facebook friend of mine who lives in Venice Beach, CA, said, " Let's go serfin'!")
This strikes me as rather silly...but a lot of architects and artists are pretty passionate people, and so it comes as not surprise that what they do is often in response to and AGAINST something in the culture ( or the "Zeitgeist" ) around them.
I think Frank Lloyd, noted control freak who told people what furniture they could have and exactly where they must place it, did beautiful houses and other buildings, but he isn't going to make me ( who has no interest in feudal social values AT ALL) going to be even vaguely annoyed by what I think is actually a rather charming and rather modest old fashioned design.
