Magnifique--absolutely charming boutique

Ordinarily, I don't pay all that much attention to these hair salons ( or spas too as they sometimes call themselves) but this one on Third Avenue between 36th and 37th Street has struck me as a place that looks several notches above most of them around here ( It was closed today for the Fourth, by the way).

Well, Yelp has good news and bad news-- women like the place a lot but also have some critcisms..

One thing, as you might expect in Manhattan, is the pricing problem. I don't know what "the going rate" is for better places like this, so I leave it to you to be the judge of that.

Well, on to Yelp!

I was thrilled to find out I was getting a cut with Tiger when I made my appointment due to the great reviews I've seen online and he did NOT disappoint. I have very curly ,unruly hair and he cut it in a way that helped not only tame the beast, but also did a beautiful blow out (which lasted me 2+ days!!!). I was so happy with my cut that I scheduled a Brazilian Blowout in two weeks :)

The receptionist is really sweet and Tiger is a gem. I will definitely make this my permanent spot for cuts.

I'm very torn about this place. On one hand, I got a great hair cut and really pretty ombre/face framing highlights - where a stylist on the fly tried to replicate and lighten what I already had done.

Maria was my stylist and she was pretty nice - but at first exclaims when she sees my hihglights (ombre style only a few in the front) "I don't know how to do ombre!" Ok, fair enough, no big deal. So we talk through what to do and she quickly realizes the method my old stylist did, and so it seemed she maybe did know the technique better than she thought.  Kudos for working with me here. She also suggested a brighter streak in the front near my face, I took her suggestion and it turned out great (I'm a pretty trusting client). Service was good, Boris was very friendly, as were most of the staff. No complaints there.

However, color toner should NOT cost $35 extra (wish I read someone's earlier review about this). That's ridiculous, every salon I've been to from the boonies of South Carolina to the most expensive in Manhattan do not charge extra for this (unless its to correct color). Granted, she gave me a heads up about the price, but let's be real - I'm already in your chair am I really going to walk out or argue? Also, she probably did around 20 foils, only highlights around my face - and I was charged a half head of highlights. Again, I don't think that's fair - it should have been partial highlights since only half of my strands were done. That was $90.

What I would definitely come back for is a cut. $50 for a cut and blow dry is a great deal. The salon was nice, had flexible hours/appointments, and used top quality products. Just wish they didn't nickle and dime for the color treatment menu.

** ALSO: warning, they don't take American Express (shocker) but do take Mastercard and Visa - but they charge you $10 if you're using a card!! Are you kidding me? After I spent $200 on services? That's just not OK for me.
