Delizia Restaurant in North Yorkville--unpretentious, good food, rear room is great

This place has a split personality, informal room up front and a much more formal space in back...

You DEFINITELY want to eat in the back room if you come here, tell you that straight away...

I have met here with friends a good number of times because except for one woman, Sara, who still lives nearby, it is convenient for us all to get to from disparate places. It is a very easy subway ride for me and other people in Manhattan and also for my friend Jesus who now lives in the Bronx.

The last time we ate here, the friendly waitress was fresh from Buenos Aires, and gave Sara a little report on the problems of being a single woman both there and here in New York. Problems everywhere, as you may imagine, but this young woman was a determined optimist (which reminds me of the classic Argentinian cartoon girl Mafalda, who when  asked by her teacher what Argentina's leading product was, naturally (for her) replied " Pessimists"....and of course to her ( as ever) chagrin got a poor grade on her report card for "deportment."

Nothing to be pessimistic about here that I can see, the subway hassle has moved down the street pretty much and the food is always great...they do Eggplant Parmigiana extremely well ( my favorite--especially since I am getting to be more vegetarian, but not vegan) and everyone loves their Tiramisu.

Well, on to Yelp as ever-- oh yeah, for some reason I had a problem here because it insisted on giving me all 63 or whatever reviews ( which range all over the place as you can imagine)--and I could not find a way to just limit it to two or three typical reviews.

What turns people off the most, I feel, is that "inexpensive pizzeria" bit with the informal front of the place--that's NOT the place to go if you eat here, you want the nice dining room in back ( one tip: if you go on a Saturday, call and make sure they don't have the back room blocked off for a private party! This happened to us once...luckily all six of us that time were able to come somewhat later and get served that way.

Now for the best I could do with Yelp

LOVE the Grandma pizza. The crust is thin, buttery and crunch. The sauce is the perfect combo of sweet yet tangy and the pizza is usually pretty fresh. The slices sell so quickly that the pizza is rarely sitting out longer than 10 minutes. At $2.50 per slice (Grandma), its a great little spot to grab a slice when you're on the go.
