Property is very expensive downtown and so it has always been a place for very big and very tall buidlings. The newest ones are not much to write home about as far as I am concerned...especially the glassified one at the top here ( next door to the new World Trade Center).
NOTE: Since I wrote this, I have had a chance to keep looking at these structures and to my surprise I find myself liking them more as I get used to them...
And, I have to admit I have been without thinking about it too much comparing them too severely with New York's best buildings-- and forgetting how REALLY mediocre, if not plain bad, a lot of them are.
I guess what bothers me about all this modernist architecture is that it is so interchangeable with buildings you could find ANYWHERE....these could be in Hong Kong, or Sao Paulo, or half a dozen other cities...
Not everything can be a landmark, I guess. And just to compare them to ordinary skysrapers of Midtown, I am not including a standardized couple of those...things don't look so bad now, do they?
