Older buildings always have so much going on up on the roof in plain sight, compared to the 1960's big box apartment buildings where they go out of their way to conceal it all from sight...
Good thing they zoned all these mid block areas to remain low rise in Murray Hill, or it would just be one big building after another...
In fact, speculators were once always suing the City about this, saying since they own the property they should be able to tear it down and build some incredibly narrow tall modern building in mid block..
City finally won that battle but not before a lot of strange tall narrow buildings had gone up, almost all on the Upper East Side.
