Camera Shyness in NYC

Young men leaving their classes at Police Academy act like a lot of people on the street, they see a camera aimed at them (even my very small one) and they turn their backs to me or shield their faces...something to hide or just guarding their privacy? Or do they feel, like the Native Americans once did, that "the camera will steal their soul?
