Every fire department is different, sure.
That’s even more true for every volunteer department — they tend to be in some way a reflection of the personality of the city they serve.
However here are the "9 Guys You’ll Meet on Every Volunteer Fire Department"

There are a few stock archetypes that you’re going to meet in any volunteer department.

Tom White That won't last. They'll need to widen that opening. Same thing happened in the early 2000's in Chicago when we got the new trucks. Just too tight for some of the old houses.

Doug-Beth Fonner Hell yes!! I think firefighters should get their ccw and carry along with any personnel on an ambulance I do both and it's scary as hell out there anymore!
Chris Rob-o Worst idea ever. One of the reasons the fire service isn't in the public crosshairs, like the police, is because we aren't armed. Also, annual training and qual is required for law enforcement. With that said, some departments have a very hard time getting their members to recert their CPR on time and you expect them to take on weapons training?
It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that today Marion County Sheriff Department in Illinois is burying one of their own.
Sheriff Rich Stevenson says in 35 years of law enforcement last Wednesday January 20, 2016 was one of the hardest days in his career.
That's when tragically 22-year-old Adam Conrad of Sandoval, IL a member of the Marion County Sheriff's Department family, was killed.

Brotherhood of Fire Rest easy little Brother... until we all meet again.
Wishing I could rewind time, 11 years ago tonight I headed into Rescue #3 for my last night.
It was an enjoyable night with a good meal and good ball breaking from the Brothers working that night, despite the fact that we were facing a major snowstorm .
How ironic tonight New York City faces another snow.

I am proud to know / work with / be in the same Fire Service as people like Brother FDNY Firefighter Naviasky.

Brotherhood of Fire I still wish I could talk to the family of the 2 year old accidental playset hanging I had the nightmare of responding to.

They moved out of the house shortly after the accident... Because it's on a busy street we drive by the house often.
Mike Cain You always carry the thoughts. The house, the intersection, the mile marker. Wishing you could wrap your arms around everyone and make the hurt go away. Stay safe.

Ladder 39's rig was hit by a car earlier today while at a call on I-71. This is why fire departments use trucks as "blockers" on freeways. Who knows how many firefighters would have been injured, or worse, if the truck hadn't been there.
