FDNY responders lauded in Brooklyn fire rescue
The Brooklyn woman and her twin daughters critically injured when a fire tore through their Borough Park home Friday night were on the mend Saturday as their FDNY rescuers were hailed as heroes.
The blaze broke out in the stairwell of the mixed-use building on 60th Street near 12th Avenue just after 11 p.m., trapping Allyson D’Angelo, 55, and her 12-year-old daughters, Abigail and Emily, in their second-floor apartment, said FDNY Chief John Hodgens.
“[The victims] were at the windows when we first pulled up,” Hodgens recalled Saturday. “In seconds, they were overcome and kind of just disappeared.”
“The stairway was engulfed,” Hodgens added.
Veteran smoke-eaters Shawn Miro and James Knauer scaled ladders to pull Allyson and one of her daughters to safety, while firefighter Joseph Addeo braved the flaming stairwell to rescue the other child, Hodgens said.
The three victims were upgraded Saturday to serious but stable condition.
“The quick actions [of the firefighters] definitely gave those people a chance,” Hodgens said.
The fire marshal said the blaze was likely sparked by an electrical malfunction.
