Jeffrey J (Indyke) Salon

I just noticed this place on East 11th Street because of its very posh, vintage style inside...what you get  mostly here is picture of well known Cast Iron Building across the street (one of the first in that area to be gentrified into luxury apartments and upscale stores).

But anyway--here with one complaint that woman't cut is more than the man's--is otherwise glowing reviews ( shame I could not get good shot of that indoor decor, people mention it)

Leon gave me the most amazing highlights, cut, and blow-out today. I walked in with a head of hair that I hadn't dyed in years and had been growing out for over a year. And I walked out with a stunningly natural and healthy trim and all-over color.

The entire staff was so friendly I spent half my day there and the time just flew right by.

    Can't wait to go back!

    I really like Jeffrey.

I feel that I finally found a stylist that really seems to get what I want and what will make me happy when I walk out. For me that is a HUGE deal!!!

He is also a super sweet guy.

Don't be surprised though to find some real dogs hanging around. Its a pet friendly place!

Every time I've gone in here, I think to myself "this is the best haircut I've ever had".

Plus, his cuts grow out well, so I don't have to go back every 2 weeks.
    Great place to go.

This seemed like such a lovely place--until I booked my appointment. The receptionist was classy, she fit me in at short notice, and they welcome dogs. (I don't have one, but I love dogs.) Everything seemed good.

Unfortunately, Jeffrey Indyke has one major flaw that's kind of a deal-breaker. According to the receptionist, the price for a woman's haircut is $60, while a man pays $50. Yes, ladies: dudes get a $10 discount just for being dudes, while we get socked with a 20 percent higher price just for being awesome. Charging women a higher price for haircuts is a clear violation of NYC's Department of Consumer Affairs Code (http://home2.nyc.gov/htm…). Not to mention the city's Human Rights Law, which is something I'd like to think we New Yorkers take pretty seriously.

When I informed the owner that gender-based discrimination is against NYC law, he became abusive and started shouting that I "don't understand his pricing system." Needless to say, I canceled my appointment. This is not the 1940s, people--men have long hair, women have short hair, and in New York City, in the immortal words of the DCA: "Pricing items differently based on gender, such as haircuts or dry cleaning, is illegal."

I got out of a training at work early, and realized it was a perfect opportunity to get my hair cut as a walk-in. I was walking around the neighborhood looking for hair salons on yelp, and this was one of the few  with over 4 stars. I was able to be seen by a stylist about 15 minutes after
walking in, which I thought was pretty reasonable.

I was looking for a basic haircut and blow dry, and I was very pleased with the results. Jeffrey was my stylist, and he did a great job in a very efficient amount of time. He was also very nice and held good conversation throughout my cut. My haircut was nicely styled -- he was sure to add some slight layers to my cut to avoid my cut looking too bland.

I would definitely recommend coming here to get your haircut/styled/colored! I will be back :)

I lived a block away from this salon last year and thus, past it everyday when walking to class.  On one of those days, a sign outside with an enticing student special lured me into an otherwise seemingly intimidating and high end salon.  Don't get me wrong, this salon is definitely high end and professional but the price is affordable ($65 plus tip for a haircut during the student special) and Jeffrey is so friendly and laid back that you forget you might just be spending more money than you should on a hair cut.  Nevertheless, Jeffrey knows what he's doing and you are paying for that level of expertise.  I walked in with a terrible "I trust my friend to cut my hair" cut to walking out with an amazing bob and great suggestions for color (which I never followed up on because of the price).  In addition, I laughed endlessly and had a great time with Jeffrey and his staff all the while I was in the chair.  The decor is as breathtaking from the inside as it appears on the outside (which is what intimidated me in the first place) and the Saint Bernards are absolutely charming beauties.  If you have a little extra cash to spend on a hair cut or you're just tired of hit or miss low end places, I would definitely recommend paying this place a visit.  Also, ask about the student special if you qualify because the only reason I wouldn't return there for every cut is because of the (justifiable) price.
