Review from Julie M.
New York, NYI've got to say I really love this gym. Around the time I joined they completely remodeled and brought in shiny new machines. I just like that the vibe here is upbeat.
When I first joined I got a bunch of training sessions with Paul, who doesn't work there anymore, and it's a shame! Because in about 3 weeks I went from barely being able to lift 10 pounds to 70 pounds with my arms. And I wasn't even doing that much exercises. He had me doing things I didn't even think I could like push ups and those big weights attached to that stick where you squat with it on your back, whatever that's called. I started getting cut right away. Just 30 minutes a couple of time a week. He really had a great strategy for me. I haven't seen any other trainers at that level, or else I'd probably get some more sessions.
The CLASSES are super fun. My favorites:
The "pound" drumstick class -- Some girls also need to notice their personal space more and not come so close to stabbing me in the eye with with their drumsticks...thanks. That said, the teacher here, Zuta, is really great. She's very upbeat even when the class is acting draggy. She's always full of positive energy. It's a great class to get out some anger as well. You hit the floor with the sticks while in a squat position, so it kills your legs. The only danger is sometimes girls hit them too hard and they shatter into two pieces -- good way to poke someone's eye out. But all in all, a fun and energetic class with some good Linkin Park and Nicki Minaj songs to drum along to.
The Zumba class -- fun. It's a very basic level class which is always nice as I'm not a professional dancer like half the girls in NYC! This class makes me feel better about my beginning level skills and no one cares if you zone out and start doing the move totally wrong. Erin is the teacher and she is always very high energy and nice. I've seen her teach spin also and she is able to be motivating and more intense in there. So it's nice she's versatile.
Fat burning ballet -- What confuses me about this class is that most of the class leaves their sneakers on. I've only taken 2 semesters of ballet in college, but I just can't imagine ballet with sneakers because you can't see what your feet are doing. Anyway, it was a fun class and much more advanced of a level than Zumba (almost everyone had clearly taken some ballet before), but much less advanced than the Midtown West Ballet Body, which is essentially a REAL ballet class with bars and nothing dumbed-down. The class had a grand pile early on, which surprised me, since in college we'd only do those after being quite warmed up, and there were hours of instruction on how to not destroy your body doing it -- and this class has no instruction of the technique. So I'd tell anyone who'd never taken any ballet to steer clear. It was super fun to do across-the-floor stuff like grand bat mas, chasses and jetes with lots of room!
Pole dancing -- scares me, because you could totally fall on your head. I don't know anyone who actually goes to this, but a lot of people talk about "someday going."
Spin -- Intense and fun. The best part is seeing which of my sports bras light up under the black lights, and which don't. Always a surprise!
The Yoga Adjustment -- I find this class to be super relaxing and non-critical. I'll go to this when super stressed. This teacher, Carl, is great. He clearly knows a lot about your body from how he gives very detailed direction of what you should be feeling, and how to avoid injury. He's a very nice person who never makes you feel bad if you don't something incorrectly, and he adjusts you in a nice way. You can tell he really cares about the class.
Ultimate Conditioning -- This class happens right before one of my other classes. They use weights, a mat, and a "step" with pushups and mountain climbers and that sort of thing. Love the idea in theory. But unfortunately half the class has really awful form and could easily injure themselves with those weights. The class moves so fast that the teacher doesn't even attempt to correct the extremely wrong form, and I can just hear things snapping...yikes.
Sucker Punch -- scares me, as it's like an actual boxing class in the ring. With a lot of hitting and pushups. I've never taken it, but I've watched it while working out close by, and you should probably know at least how to throw a punch before walking into that.
My only other comment about the classes is that some teachers will get your heart rate up extremely high, and then tell you to sit on a mat. While they mess with the music for several minutes. That's super unhealthy to jump from really fast heart rate to sitting completely still, and there should be some marching or something in between...
Also the teachers should walk through and make sure the spacing is OK because some newer girls don't give themselves enough personal space, and will hit into others. -

Manhattan, NYOverall Crunch is an OK gym.
They have some good instructors.. The rest is sub par. But like with anything you get what you put in.
The customer service really sucks.. Heres why
Loose your Keytag - $5 replacement. They are very rude about this policy.
Get stuck at work and you can't make your class? Too bad they will count it as a strike against your account
3 strikes your out ! And you can register for classes anymore online for a month
I thought a gym was supposed to work for you?
I would GLADLEY switch once I have time to explore other gyms... I was a member of Gold's for years and they were amazing and knew how to treat their customers. -

Manhattan, NY-1 star for the fact that it's in a basement so there is no natural light
-.5 star for the spiral staircase leading down
This gym is okay-it'll do for the price of 70/month. It's not nearly or even remotely as nice as the 34th location, so if I could recommend 1 crunch location, it would be 34th. The 59th street location is pretty dingy and dark- it's in a basement. It is a wide layout and the classes are pretty good, but they need to offer better morning class options. There's never a wait for a cardio machine here. -

Trying to cancel after a TERRIBLE time with a personal trainer. The guy constantly double booked, cancelled, and took WEEKS to reply to emails to set up times. I was basically pushed into 5 highly overpriced sessions and after the 1st session, he was already talking about renewing for another 5. Give me a break.
I cancelled my membership, I have paperwork, signatures, and emails on the cancellation, but of course they charged me the next months fees anyway. And OF COURSE, no one can help me get my money refunded. These people are criminals.
Nice gym though, if you never do personal training or try to cancel.1 Previous Review: Show all »

The only thing I don't like about this gym is the spiral staircase leading you in. Great, up to date… Read more »

Fourth Crunch location I have been to. Only 8 more to go and I have 8 days to hit all of them before my one-month membership expires. Can I do it? I am up for the challenge!
I like this location better than the W 83th St and W 54th St locations. The gym is underground and very spacious. Everything is well spread out and lots of equipment. The female locker room is a bit weird, with the showers and bathrooms far off from the actual lockers. But whatever.
Lots and lots of treadmills, so that's great for me. They also have a snack bar at the entrance, so pretty cool. I didn't get to try it, but it's nice to smell raw veggies permeate the whole gym.
When I was there around 9pm, they also had a DJ spinning tunes, how fun! The counter help was nice and also let me charge my phone at the desk.
Too bad this gym is in a part of town that I am allergic to, but otherwise, a great place to work out and chill out a bit. I like the relaxed feel of the place. Oh and there is a small area for indoor rock climbing. So pretty awesome. -

What I like most about this location is the layout and size. As you walk up to the gym the only thing on the ground level is the juice bar, which is next to the entrance of Crunch. As you walk into Crunch there is a spiral staircase that you take downstairs to the checkin desk and locker rooms. The locker rooms were huge, much bigger than some of the other locations that I've been too, but not as nice as the 34th street location. The frist level of the gym has cardio, locker rooms, and personal training. The second level of the gym is all free weights and machines (which seemed to be new). As I got to walking around the frist floor I discovered the additional cardio room in the very back of the gym. I was amazed. This location is pretty big. Definitely a new favorite. -

Manhattan, NYthe only good think about this location is they added new cardio equipment. staff is rude.. personal trainers are obnoxious and give unsolicited aka UNWATED advice..that was also bad advice! I also was berraged with emails and linkend in requests from personal trainers even though I NEVER expressed interested. The locker room is dirty. The entire gym has a disgusting smell even though cleaning people seem to be around. The classes are not very good, overly crowded and mats smell. not worth $90 -

Manhattan, NYJust a warning!!! After I cancelled my membership, I got an email conformation that is was cancelled, YET I was still charged the next month fee. I just called and they are going to refund my money in 3 weeks!!
They would not let me talk to a supervisor and when I asked for another number to call, I got a number to a recording of the hours the gym is open.
The gym itself was nice but trying to get out of the membership is horrible!! -

Great Neck, NYThey are crooks. You sign on for life once they have your credit card info. If you must pay by the month by check or cash! -

New York, NYI came to this location for the first - and probably last - time for a class, but ended up not being able to get in because you have to sign up for the class ahead of time and it was full. There was nothing on their schedule that indicated that, so if you're planning to take a class here, I suggest calling ahead of time to make sure you don't need to sign up for it first.
The space is huge, with winding hallways that seem to never end. The whole place feels oddly dim and grungy, even though it seems like there are bright colors everywhere. There are personal trainers everywhere who will watch you as you work at the weights, and more than the usual number of guys who will check you out. Apparently the reminders painted in big letters on the walls - "No Judgement" - should be in brighter colors. While nothing explicitly bad happened while I was there, the best way I can think to describe my experience here is "uncomfortable."
I still gave this place three stars, because they have great equipment: a rock climbing wall, a boxing ring and bags, and an astounding number of cardio machines. If you're into the "see and be seen" kind of gyms, you will probably fit right in here. -

New York, NYWhatever; a gym is a gym, right? If the equipment/machines work, that's all it matters...as they say.
I don't use the machines or equipment because I have this really horrible fear that I'm doing it wrong and don't want to look like a fool. Don't judge me.
I only go to the gym for the classes. This location and the Union Square location has the most classes...that I'm interested in.
I gotta say, though...from all the Manhattan locations I've been to, this is my favorite location. It is much, much more spacious. More machines and equipments, I've noticed. (Not that I care, ya know...) and the locker room feels like a maze. There's 3 separate sections in the "women's locker room". One section for the restroom, one HUGEEE section for the locker room itself, and another section for the showers and steam room. They even have a separate "store" by the entrance where they sell shakes/smoothies. Did I mention they also have a rock climbing wall?
Also, I feel as if the staff here are extremely friendly and helpful. Big plus!
I never thought I'd actually get excited about going to the gym until I stepped into this particular one. Awesome job, Crunch! I'll be frequenting this location more often now. -

I am a former gym junkie who gave up her membership to use the free work gym. It has worked out well except I miss one thing - SPIN!
Thankfully Groupon has come through a few times and that is how I found myself at Crunch.
So far I've been to 3 spin classes (or rather, The Ride, as it's called her) and love the instructors! I've had two different ones - Vladmir B and Mitch K. They are both high energy fab and Mitch is more like a DJ.
Equipment- a few of the spin bikes have seen better days but they are perfectly usable. Haven't used any cardio equipment but it looks pretty new. Stretching area is nice; weights area leaves a little to be desired for me. I typically use 8, 10, and 12 lb dumbells and have a hard time finding them here. 15+ lb ones are very easy to come by though so if you are that strong it will work in your favor!
Locker rooms - clean, very spacious. Only ONE hair dryer though. Are you kidding? I didn't have time to wait for it one morning and went out in the cold with my wet hair pulled back. The second time I raced through the shower after class to make sure I was the first one out.
Now, it's not very crowded here early in the morning before work, but ONE hair dryer seems a little odd, given the size of this location.
If I wasn't moving soon I would definitely consider joining. It is a step up from NYSC has instructors and classes on par with Equinox for less money. It's right in the middle, I think a membership is about $90/mo. ($145 Equinox, $70ish NYSC)
