Denver Health Paramedic Division Leading the Way in Patient Care at Denver International Airport

DENVER, CO  – Denver Health Paramedics just added a Segway SE-3 Patroller to their line-up of emergency care vehicles at Denver International Airport.
“The Segway, which has been specially outfitted to carry our medical equipment, allows us to more easily navigate some of the smaller areas of the airport like elevators, train platforms and the corridors of the new on-site hotel,” said Brent Stevenson, Assistant EMS Chief, Airport Operations. “In addition, the higher vertical profile of the SE-3 increases our visibility, letting us move quickly and safely through the airport crowds and ensuring we are capable of providing the best patient care.”
The SE-3 was introduced by Segway in early 2015 and the Denver Health Paramedic Division is the first EMS systems in the country to use it for patient care at an airport.
“With 53 million passengers traveling through the airport each year, Denver International Airport is the fifth busiest in the United States and it is a top priority to get emergency care to someone who needs it,” said DIA Chief Operating Officer Ken Greene. “The SE-3 is just one more way to ensure that happens quickly and efficiently.”
Denver Health Paramedics respond to approximately 380 calls per month at the airport. If a traveler falls ill or becomes injured, paramedics are located on site in the main terminal and at each of the three concourses. Medical assistance can be requested by using one of the white courtesy phones located throughout the airport or by dialing 911 from a cell phone.
Denver Health is the Rocky Mountain Region’s Level I academic trauma center, and the safety net hospital for the Denver area. The Denver Health system, which integrates acute and emergency care with public and community health, includes the Rocky Mountain Regional Trauma Center, Denver’s 911 emergency medical response system, Denver Health Paramedic Division, eight family health centers, 16 school-based health centers, the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center, NurseLine, Denver CARES, Denver Public Health, the Denver Health Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Center for Medical Response to Terrorism, Mass Casualties and Epidemics.
