William Krukowski rode his bike 17 miles to and from work every shift. He took up bicycling, and quit skydiving and motorcycles when he became a father. Devoted to his young son, among their many regular activities was watching “The Simpsons” together. Bill was sometimes called “Super Probie” during his three years at Ladder 21

The 5 firefighters were passengers in a van headed from Oregon to Colorado to fight the Hayman fire. There were a total of 11 firefighters in the van and a total of 8 vans in a caravan.The caravan had just stopped in Parachute, Colorado for food and fuel. During a diving exercise off Meigs Field Friday, Mr. Drobitsch lost consciousness and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Appointed in 1981, Kerwin was a 20-year veteran with the FDNY and a 16-year veteran of the Levittown Volunteer Fire Department, their chief for the last eight years. He was made a Fire Marshall in 1993 and a Lieutenant in 1997. Accepted into Special Operation Command in 1999, Kerwin was hand-picked to join the newly formed Squad 288 in Queens

FireFighter Harry Ford, 50, a 27 year veteran assigned to Rescue 4 in Queens, and FireFighter John Downing, 40, an 11 year veteran assigned to Ladder 163 in Queens were killed in front of the building when the facade collapsed on them. They were both performing ventilation when the blast occured. They were pulled from the rubble and sent to Elmhurst Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
FireFighter Brian Fahey, 46, a 14 year veteran also assigned to Rescue 4 in Queens was on the first floor when the blast occured, trapping him in the basement beneath rubble. Brian was in radio contact for a short period before his radio went silent. It took his brothers four hours to remove him from the rubble.

On June 16, 2006, ex-captain Michael J. Greene died in the line of duty. While removing a salvage cover that had suffered fire damage, Mike was electrocuted when he came into contact with a sign that was unknowingly energized.

Firefighter Waters was engaged in exterior suppression directing a 2 1/2 line through the basement windows of the structure. Without warning, the dwelling collapsed, trapping Waters and five other firefighters.

Firefighter Autry died from traumatic injuries sustained after being involved in a motor vehicle crash while responding to a fire alarm. Ms. Aurty was thrown from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

Firefighter Philip R. Cirrito, 47, suffered an apparant heart attack and died while on duty at the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore, PA, in the early morning hours of June 9, 1999.
