Safety experts said that the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia, killing at least eight people, was travelling at twice the speed limit. Amtrak Train 188 was going from Washington to New York when it derailed on Tuesday night, leaving more than 200 people injured.

A police officer accused of shooting a demonstrator in the Buterere neighbourhood of Bujumbura, Burundi, is attacked by protesters. There have been weeks of protests over President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term in office, viewed as an unconstitutional move, as well as an attempted coup this week. The officer was eventually handed back to her colleagues.

The Red Arrows passed over London during celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day. At an event in Westminster Abbey, the Archbishop of Canterbury said the veterans had ensured "victory over the greatest darkness of the 20th Century".

Students held protests across Chile on Thursday in a bid to change the country's education system. The BBC's Gideon Long in Santiago said that many of these marches end in violence, with masked youths fighting with police who respond with tear gas and water cannon.

Fifteen people, including a 16-year-old boy, were arrested following clashes with police during an anti-austerity protest close to Downing Street. Ch Supt Gerry Campbell said the "vast majority" of protesters had taken part peacefully, but added that a "small minority" had been intent on causing disorder.
