Female TV reporter puts vulgar football fans in their place
There’s been a rather stupid trend online for the past year or so of young men running into live news broadcasts with female presenters and screaming "f*** her right in the p****".
FHRITP, as it's known, started out as a fake "news clip" before becoming a real problem for reporters trying to do their job, as many are constantly interrupted with vulgar language on live television.
Canadian news reporter Shauna Hunt, however, has had enough of it, and used her broadcast on Sunday to make fools of the vulgar football fans who tried to embarrass her.
Reporting from the Toronto FC v Houston Dynamo MLS game, Hunt was interrupted by the "f her in the p" meme, to giggles from a group of nearby lads - who she turned on and confronted.
"It's a disgusting thing to say, it's degrading to women," she said. "I'm sick of this, I get this every single day, 10 times a day, when rude guys like you talk into my microphone."
Placed on the spot, some of the assembled fans tried to justify their "joke" - with one saying: "I feel like it's quite substantial - are you filming this!?"
"It's f***in' hilarious!" another insists. "You're lucky there's not a vibrator in your ear, like in England because it happens all the time - it's f***in' amazing!"
Since Hunt took her verbal abusers to task, both the Toronto media and local police have voiced their support.
Our media partners should not have to deal with #FHRITP. Cause Disturbance seems to apply. http://t.co/qxwek6SLnWpic.twitter.com/gqiN2oNoXH— Kingston Police (@kingstonpolice) May 12, 2015
"Our media partners should not have to deal with FHRITP. Cause Disturbance seems to apply," Kingston Police tweeted, accompanied by excerpts from relevant laws on "insulting or obscene language" and "interference with … something as small as being distracted from one's work."
Her employer, City TV, rowed in behind her immediately, interviewing several of their staff on their experiences following the incident.
Their stories of harassment come from all manner of situations - including outside schools, and at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Hunt has been tweeting thanks for messages of support from her fellow journalists, and has created something of a discussion point for broadcast media employees in North America.
Wow. Thanks for all the support! This happens to reporters across North America. Hopefully people will think twice before harassing us.— Shaunacitynews (@shaunacitynews) May 12, 2015
Maybe, just maybe, we'll see an end to his kind of idiocy soon - there's nothing wrong with enjoying reporters' errors (male and female alike) with good old fashioned bloopers.
