At San Fancisco's Exploratorium, science lessons turn into adventures. The new home of the children's hands-on museum is a century-old warehouse on a pier suspended over San Francisco Bay that has been transformed into a highly efficient facility. Programmable circuit breakers cut peak building consumption loads. Rainwater is stored for reuse underneath the pier inside one of the building's new structural pile caps.

High Performing Buildings updated their cover photo.
Federal Center South Building 1202 is home to the Seattle district headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A 60 ft wide office floor plate in the shape of a closed oxbow helps provides optimal orientation and reduces thermal loads. (Open office space is limited on this western edge, one of the toughest orientations.) The building operates among the top 1% of energy-efficient offices in the U.S., recording a first-year energy use intensity of 33.3 kBtu per square foot.
