Below is live audio, video and details from tonight’s Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia. As of 10:30 pm ET this was a fourth alarm mass casualty incident.
BRIEFING AT 11:40 PM
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says there are at least five people dead in tonight’s Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia. The incident occurred at 9:28 pm with Philadelphia Fire Department reporting there six overturned train cars. In addition to the dead there are at least six critically injured and 43 others with injuries. There were 243 people on the train, including five members of the crew of Train 188.
The Philadelphia Fire Department sounded four alarms and declared it a Level 3 mass casualty incident. Numerous passengers were trapped. At this point, a secondary search is now underway.

As of 11:09 pm ET this tweet at 10:18 pm is the only information from Amtrak. At approximately 11:14 pm Amtrak tweeted that they are aware of injuries and that all rail traffic between New York and Philly has been canceled. Some people were reported trapped in the train, and crews were cutting into the cars to try to free the injured.Ladder 10 was the first to respond to the scene. When firefighters arrived, they found two people under the train, a fire official said.
Rescue crews have been called to an Amtrak train derailment in the Port RIchmond section of Philadelphia.Action News is being told 8 to 10 cars derailed. Approximately 200 people were on board when the train derailed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer is calling this a mass casualty incident.
At least 50 people were hurt after an Amtrak train derailed in the Frankford section of Philadelphia Tuesday night, according to officials.Officials say eight to ten cars derailed on the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf Lane. At least 50 people were injured though officials have not yet revealed their conditions. Many of the passengers were taken to Aria Health Frankford. Officials say approximately 240 people in all were on board. The train was heading to New York from Washington, DC, according to officials.
