CAL-FIRE BC STRUCK ASSISTING MOTORIST

Saturday, May 16, 2015   A Cal Fire battalion chief was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle while helping a stranded motorist near Temecula, fire officials say.
Battalion Chief Casey Hartman came across a stranded motorist about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14, along Borel Road near Warren Road, CHP officials said.
The vehicle was partially blocking the eastbound lane, so the battalion chief positioned his marked Cal Fire pickup truck behind the vehicle and activated the amber warning lights, CHP officials said in a news release.
As the battalion chief was helping the person, 36-year-old Nuevo resident Ciria Flores was driving westbound on Borel at an unsafe speed in the rain. As she approached the scene, she lost control of her vehicle and smashed into Hartman’s truck, the release said.
The truck skid into Hartman, knocking him to the ground and injuring his leg. Flores’ vehicle then spun out of control and went into a ditch, officials said.
Paramedics took Hartman to a hospital with mo... [ more ]

5 FFs INJURED AT YONKERS, NY HOUSE FIRE

Thursday, May 14, 2015    A Yonkers house fire sent five firefighters to the hospital and forced 18 people from their home on Wednesday, officials said.A blaze snaked through the multifamily house on Lamartine Avenue around 4:41 p.m., Fire Chief David Dronzek said. Flames started on the first floor before rising to the top two floors of the three-story home, he said.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour, Dronzek said, as about 50 firefighters fought the flames. Five firefighters were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries, he said.

Red Cross spokeswoman Carolyn Sherwin said that volunteers were helping 13 adults and five children from four families who live at the house, which was uninhabitable for the night.

There was not a lot of fire damage, Dronzek said, but the house was damaged more by water and firefighters chasing the flames. It was unclear what caused the fire, he said, but it did not seem suspicious.

Thursday, May 14, 2015   Commending his men for the bravery shown by them in rescuing two of their colleagues, acting fire chief P S Rahangdale admitted that the 16 rescuers could have died because the building collapsed within a couple of minutes after the second person was rescuedIn the wake of an inquiry panel questioning the need for the firemen to enter the burning Gokul Niwas building in Kalbadevi, considering that none of the occupants were trapped inside, the acting chief fire officer has praised the bravery shown by his men in saving their colleagues.

The acting chief fire officer, P S Rahangdale, said 16 of his men risked death to try and save four of their colleagues — including their chief, Sunil Nesarikar — who got trapped after a portion of the porch collapsed. BRAND NEW FIREHOUSE DESTROYED BY TORNADO

KSFY Video
Tuesday, May 12, 2015   Rescue crews are there for everyone when we need them but sometimes they also need help.Sunday's tornado destroyed Delmont's fire station, but it's getting by with a help from nearby towns like Tripp.

The day after a tornado tore through Delmont, the damage isn't limited to those who need help but those who also give it.

Delmont Fire Chief Elmer Goehring said "I hate to see our equipment sitting in there. There's so much other stuff going on right now, that we aren't real focused on that at all."

Strong winds knocked down the town fire hall but it didn't shake Fire Chief Goehring.

"I can't really say that it affected me at all. The homes are what I knew... I didn't really think much of it," Goehring said.

Delmont's fire station was barely six months old before a tornado ripped it to shreds.

"January, we moved in. It's been probably a five-year project securing funding, and some of it wasn't all that fun. It was a rea... [ more ]

UPDATE: Deputy Fire chief Still On Ventilator

Tuesday, May 12, 2015   The condition of deputy chief fire officer, Sudhir Amin, who suffered 90% burns in Saturday's fire is very critical as both his kidneys have failed. Dr Sunil Keswani, medical director of the National Burns Centre, Airoli, said he would be put on dialysis.

Amin has been on ventilator support in the ICU from the time of his admission at 11.30pm on Saturday. His lungs were damaged as he inhaled a lot of smoke while trapped in the burning Kalbadevi building for over two hours. No more surgeries have been performed on him, since his condition has not shown improvement. His wife, who was in Mangalore at the time of the incident, reached Mumbai on Sunday night.

At the BMC's general body meeting on Monday, Amin was confirmed in the post in which he had been officiating for a while.

Meanwhile the condition of chief fire officer Sunil Nesrikar has marginally improved. A surgery to graft skin has already been performed and Dr Keswani said the procedure will b... [ more ]

Fire Brigade Yet To Learn From Past Firefighter LODD's, Say Relatives

Tuesday, May 12, 2015   The deaths of two fire officials, while dousing a major fire at a Kalbadevi building on Saturday, has reopened old wounds of firemen's widows and other relatives, who feel the fire brigade has not learnt its lessons despite having lost several personnel on duty. Less than a year ago, in July 2014, a major fire in the 22-storey Lotus Business Park in Andheri, caused the death of Nitin Yevlekar who was attached to the Borivli fire station. His widow Shubangi, 32, received compensation and a job according to her qualifications and is now a nurse at Bhagwati Municipal General Hospital. However, she says the incident forced her to take charge of her life as she has two very young children. "The fire brigade has not learnt its lessons even after losing so many human lives. At that time I cried myself hoarse on how there was no proper teamwork or equipment, which caused the death of my husband. This incident only shows the situation continues to remain the same," said Shubangi.

CLOSE CALL AT ATTIC FIRE

Tuesday, May 12, 2015   We were dispatched as the fourth due engine on a working residential structure in a single story sing family dwelling. fire. We arrived as the second engine, and secured the water supply for the first due engine positioned on side A. Myself and the rest of my crew (seven) ran forward to the A side, at that time, the rest of the crew was instructed to throw ladders off of the first truck, while my partner and I pulled a second handline. I noted on my approach to the structure heavy fire venting from the attic space. with an attic ladder in place, I began to crawl up the ladder and through the tight space. The situation is a little difficult to explain, because the fire was behind me as i climbed the ladder, therefore I could not attack it. As my head entered the attic, I noted heavy heat. I opened the nozzle directly overhead trying to cool the environment. Realizing that wasnt doing much, I went all the way up into the attic and realized most of the fire was directly behind me. I tr... [ more ]

"MISLEADING" REPORT ON FIREFIGHTERS GOES UP IN SMOKE

Tuesday, May 12, 2015   Canadian Firefighters are pouring cold water on a "misleading" new report from the Fraser Institute. The Canadian branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters is hosing down the right-wing think tank's claim that because the number of fires in Ontario has gone down while the number of firefighters has gone up, this means we need fewer firefighters.

"It’s misleading to suggest fire services are over-resourced because fires have dropped," IAFF Canada representative Scott Marks told PressProgress.

"Even if there are fewer fires," he pointed out, "with fewer fire department resources available, the fires that do occur would grow more quickly and become larger and more dangerous."

The Fraser Institute's report on "municipal fire services in Canada" questions the "role of fire services personnel and the extent to which their work is providing value for money."

And to emphasize just how well they understand the "value" firefight... [ more ]
