Michigan Street in Edon. All of the department’s fire equipment was destroyed and Edon Police Chief Tom Szymczak said the building had major damage. No firefighters or personnel were in the volunteer fire house when the fire started. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The department is meeting on Monday to figure out what they are going to do until the department is rebuilt. In the meantime, other departments in the area will take over responding to incidents in Florence Township. A GoFundMe account has already been set up in the department’s name to help cover the costs of replacing equipment. The fire department covers the Village of Edon, Blakeslee, Florence Township, and the Ohio Turnpike.       Tweet   TAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO THIS WORKING FIRE RADIO TRAFFIC  Tuesday, May 5, 2015   Take a moment and listen to this fire ground audio from a fire a few days ago in Highland Park, MI. According to the person who sent it to us, Highland Park is completely surrounded by Detroit and as of the first of this year, is dispatched by Detroit FD and is part of an automatic mutual aid system whereby Detroit sends a Chief, an Engine or Two and a Rescue Squad on box alarms (structure fires) in Highland Park. The submitter of this heard this live and could not believe what was happening. The Firefighters of Highland Park have some significant challenges....... Apparently, Highland Park received the call directly and responded with a reported 7 Firefighters on scene without the automatic aid-after the DFD dispatcher asked if they wanted the full assignment.       Tweet   FIREFIGHTER DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-HOUSE FIRE-POUGHKEEPSIE, NY  Tuesday, May 5, 2015   We regret to pass on to you that a Poughkeepsie Firefighter has died in the Line of Duty from cardiac-related issues he experienced while fighting that fatal house fire yesterday. Firefighter Timothy Gunther, 54, was a 21-year veteran of the fire department. One occupant of the building, a man, was found deceased upstairs in a closet. The victim apparently died of smoke inhalation. The victim apparently died of smoke inhalation. Three firefighters were injured in the attempt to rescue the victim, Chief Mark Johnson said. One was seriously hurt and was admitted yesterday to Vassar Brothers Medical Center, City of Poughkeepsie. The other two firefighters suffered an injured shoulder and an injured back and were taken to hospitals for examination or treatment. City firefighters responded to an alarm at 10:58 a.m., called in by several neighbors, and found heavy fire, Johnson said. PFD Firefighters found one occupant, a man, deceased upstairs in a closet. The Fire Chief speculated that the smoke and heat from the first-floor fire rose to the upstairs and may have impaired the man's ability to get around. ... [ more ]       Tweet   TWO FIREFIGHTERS DIE IN THE LINE OF DUTY: PENNSYLVANIA AND GEORGIA-MEDICAL EMERGENCIES  Tuesday, May 5, 2015   We regret to pass on to you the Line of Duty Deaths of the following two Firefighters:Swainsboro, Georgia: Lt Ricky Thurman died in the Line of Duty this evening Monday, May 4, 2015, Lieutenant Thurman was operating at the scene of a house fire on Wadley Road at around 2200 hours. While operating at the fire, he suffered cardiac arrest and was unable to be revived. Swainsboro is east of Macon and south of Augusta. Pine Grove, Pennsylvania Firefighter Timothy Peters, 46, responded to a medical assistance call with his fire company (Pine Grove Hose, Hook and Ladder Fire Co. No. 1) on the afternoon of April 30, 2015. Later that evening at 1930 hrs, Peters was stricken by an apparent heart attack at his residence. Their colleagues did not perish in a rampaging fire or in a sundered building. They all succumbed to cancer. [ more ]       Tweet   FIREFIGHTER LINE OF DUTY DEATH-WHILE RESPONDING TO A CALL  Monday, May 4, 2015    As an update to the earlier Secret List, we regret to pass on to you that the Orchard Farm Fire Protection District (Missouri) is mourning the loss of a longtime volunteer Firefighter today. Firefighter / Engineer Larry Lawhorn, 60, suffered an apparent medical event while responding to an emergency call in Portage Des Sioux early this morning and later died in the Line of Duty. Shortly after 0200, Lawhorn was traveling northbound on Highway J responding to a structure fire on Second Street in Portage Des Sioux when his OFFPD vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a field. He was found by other personnel as they left the Portage Des Sioux call. Despite resuscitation efforts by Firefighters from the OFFPD and Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District and Paramedics from St. Charles County Ambulance District, Lawhorn was later pronounced dead on-scene. more ]       Tweet   FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AFTER A TREE FALLS AT FIRE SCENE  Sunday, May 3, 2015    We regret to pass on to you that a Madison County (Tennessee-NE of Memphis) Firefighter has traumatically died in the line of duty. While operating at an overnight vehicle fire (as the result of a crash) at Highway 18 and Medon-Malesus Road last night. Firefighter Chris Blankenship was fatally injured when a tree unexpectedly fell on top of Firefighter Blankenship trapping him beneath the tree and the ground. Firefighter Blankenship was taken to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after being administered first-aid on scene by fellow firefighters but later passed away at the hospital.. FF Blankenship was assigned to Fire Station #2, served 10 years with the department and leaves behind a wife, Ashley Chism Blankenship, and two children, Baily and Chase. Funeral arrangements are pending. RIP.       Tweet   FIREHOUSE CLOSINGS IN CA  KRON4 Video  Saturday, May 2, 2015   The East Contra Costa Fire Protection district is no stranger to money problems. The department is currently running on a Federal Grants, but money is drying up quickly.Voters could have voted to raise $4 million dollars to continue the service, but chose not to. The district serves more than 100,000 people and the $4 million could have kept it fully operational for the next four years. According to officials, there are more than 6,000 calls for service annually. Due to the lack of funds, two of the fire houses will be closed permanently. The president of the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County, Vince Wells released a statement saying, “Two more station closures and firefighter layoffs will mean it takes longer to get the help you need in an emergency. These drastic reductions in service levels are something this community cannot afford given the continued growth in East County.”       Tweet   TOLEDO MAYOR DOES THE RIGHT THING AND ESTABLISHES A TASK FORCE RE: NIOSH LODD INVESTIGATION AND REPORT  Friday, May 1, 2015    Toledo (Ohio) Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson says she wants to make sure the city moves forward appropriately after the release of a report that identified factors that may have contributed to the deaths of Toledo firefighters Privates Stephen Machcinski and Jamie Dickman. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released the report on its findings regarding the north Toledo fire that resulted in two firefighter deaths last year. [ more ]       Tweet   WOMAN SUES CITY OVER FF HUSBANDS DEATH  Wednesday, April 29, 2015    The wife of a former career firefighter who died of lung cancer in 2013 is suing the city of Vancouver, alleging that her husband was exposed to deadly levels of radon gas while on the job.Wendy Ann Murray filed the lawsuit April 20 on behalf of her husband’s estate and beneficiaries. Her husband, Carl Murray, died July 30, 2013. The lawsuit alleges that the city knew of the toxic levels of radon gas in its fire stations during the time Murray was employed. The levels of gas were found to be the highest in the physical fitness areas in the basements of the fire stations, where Murray worked out, the lawsuit says. According to the lawsuit, the city failed to provide a safe workplace for firefighters or to properly train command personnel, and it didn’t comply with the state’s Industrial Safety and Health Act and administrative code or its own regulations and policies. [ more ]       Tweet   FF INJURED AT IL HOUSE FIRE  Wednesday, April 29, 2015   One firefighter was burned while another escaped injury during separate incidents while handling an early morning fire Tuesday. City firefighters responded to the scene of the fire just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at 511 W. Harrison St. where a house-turned-apartment complex had caught fire. Assistant Chief Tom Pruitt said fire was visible on the first and second floors as well as the rear of the two-story structure. Crews were trying to attack the fire from the interior when a firefighter fell through a floor. Pruitt said he was not injured. Later, a firefighter was hit by hot tar dripping from the roof of the structure. He suffered minor burns to the face and was taken to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center where he was treated and released by late Tuesday morning.
