Firefighter / Engineer Larry Lawhorn, 60, suffered an apparent medical event while responding to an emergency call in Portage Des Sioux early this morning and later died in the Line of Duty. Shortly after 0200, Lawhorn was traveling northbound on Highway J responding to a structure fire on Second Street in Portage Des Sioux when his OFFPD vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a field. He was found by other personnel as they left the Portage Des Sioux call. Despite resuscitation efforts by Firefighters from the OFFPD and Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District and Paramedics from St. Charles County Ambulance District, Lawhorn was later pronounced dead on-scene. more ]       Tweet   FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AFTER A TREE FALLS AT FIRE SCENE  Sunday, May 3, 2015    We regret to pass on to you that a Madison County (Tennessee-NE of Memphis) Firefighter has traumatically died in the line of duty. While operating at an overnight vehicle fire (as the result of a crash) at Highway 18 and Medon-Malesus Road last night. Firefighter Chris Blankenship was fatally injured when a tree unexpectedly fell on top of Firefighter Blankenship trapping him beneath the tree and the ground. Firefighter Blankenship was taken to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after being administered first-aid on scene by fellow firefighters but later passed away at the hospital.. FF Blankenship was assigned to Fire Station #2, served 10 years with the department and leaves behind a wife, Ashley Chism Blankenship, and two children, Baily and Chase. Funeral arrangements are pending. RIP.       Tweet   FIREHOUSE CLOSINGS IN CA  KRON4 Video  Saturday, May 2, 2015   The East Contra Costa Fire Protection district is no stranger to money problems. The department is currently running on a Federal Grants, but money is drying up quickly.Voters could have voted to raise $4 million dollars to continue the service, but chose not to. The district serves more than 100,000 people and the $4 million could have kept it fully operational for the next four years. According to officials, there are more than 6,000 calls for service annually. Due to the lack of funds, two of the fire houses will be closed permanently. The president of the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County, Vince Wells released a statement saying, “Two more station closures and firefighter layoffs will mean it takes longer to get the help you need in an emergency. These drastic reductions in service levels are something this community cannot afford given the continued growth in East County.”       Tweet   TOLEDO MAYOR DOES THE RIGHT THING AND ESTABLISHES A TASK FORCE RE: NIOSH LODD INVESTIGATION AND REPORT  Friday, May 1, 2015    Toledo (Ohio) Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson says she wants to make sure the city moves forward appropriately after the release of a report that identified factors that may have contributed to the deaths of Toledo firefighters Privates Stephen Machcinski and Jamie Dickman. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released the report on its findings regarding the north Toledo fire that resulted in two firefighter deaths last year. [ more ]       Tweet   WOMAN SUES CITY OVER FF HUSBANDS DEATH  Wednesday, April 29, 2015    The wife of a former career firefighter who died of lung cancer in 2013 is suing the city of Vancouver, alleging that her husband was exposed to deadly levels of radon gas while on the job.Wendy Ann Murray filed the lawsuit April 20 on behalf of her husband’s estate and beneficiaries. Her husband, Carl Murray, died July 30, 2013. The lawsuit alleges that the city knew of the toxic levels of radon gas in its fire stations during the time Murray was employed. The levels of gas were found to be the highest in the physical fitness areas in the basements of the fire stations, where Murray worked out, the lawsuit says. According to the lawsuit, the city failed to provide a safe workplace for firefighters or to properly train command personnel, and it didn’t comply with the state’s Industrial Safety and Health Act and administrative code or its own regulations and policies. [ more ]       Tweet   FF INJURED AT IL HOUSE FIRE  Wednesday, April 29, 2015   One firefighter was burned while another escaped injury during separate incidents while handling an early morning fire Tuesday. City firefighters responded to the scene of the fire just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at 511 W. Harrison St. where a house-turned-apartment complex had caught fire. Assistant Chief Tom Pruitt said fire was visible on the first and second floors as well as the rear of the two-story structure. Crews were trying to attack the fire from the interior when a firefighter fell through a floor. Pruitt said he was not injured. Later, a firefighter was hit by hot tar dripping from the roof of the structure. He suffered minor burns to the face and was taken to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center where he was treated and released by late Tuesday morning. [ more ]       Tweet   MA FF INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE/EXPLOSION  Wednesday, April 29, 2015    A firefighter and another person were injured Tuesday night in a four-alarm blaze that followed an explosion at a Randolph home.A fire watch remained in place at 40 Tiffany Drive on Wednesday morning as the state fire marshal's office investigated the cause of the fire, which was reported just before midnight by neighbors who said they heard an explosion. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Connor said there was "not a lot" left of the home by the time most fire crews left around 4:30 a.m., with parts of the house collapsed in on itself.Randolph Fire Chief Richard Donovan said early Wednesday morning that three people were inside the house when fire broke out. All three made it out, but one was injured and was taken to the hospital.Donovan said he didn't know the extent of the person’s injuries.As of 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, crews were still working to put out the fire, which Donovan said appeared to have started in the basement. [ more ]       Tweet   NIOSH REPORT: DOUBLE TOLEDO LODD  Wednesday, April 29, 2015   A draft of the federal report that details the January, 2014, fire that killed two Toledo firefighters concludes numerous factors contributed to their deaths.The 46-page report on the deaths of Pvts. Stephen Machcinski and James "Jamie" Dickman was compiled by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and took more than a year to complete. A draft of the report was obtained by The Blade and a final report is due out this week, sources said. The report lists eight factors as contributing to the deaths: arson, risk assessment and scene size-up, resource deployment, fireground tactics, inadequate water supply, crew staffing, lack of a full-time safety officer, and no sprinkler system in the building. The report also makes 11 recommendations for departmental implementation, but does not go further than pinpointing those. [ more ]       Tweet   FIRE TRAINING OFFICER DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY WHILE TURNING OUT - KANASA  Wednesday, April 29, 2015    We regret to pass on to you that Fire Training Officer Mike Corm, 68, of the Conway Springs FD, died in the Line of Duty yesterday, While putting on gear at the station preparing to respond on a fire call, Fire Training Officer Corn collapsed. Fellow Firefighters immediately provided medical assistance but Corn succumbed to his injury, the nature and cause of which is still to be determined.F.T.O. RIP.       Tweet   FIRE APPARATUS CRASH W/FATALITY IN CALIFORNIA  Tuesday, April 28, 2015   A SUV collided with a Stockton Fire Engine this morning, injuring all involved and fatally injuring a passenger of the SUV. Three firefighters and two patients from the SUV were transported to the hospital, where one passenger of the SUV was declared deceased. This morning after 10 a.m. Engine 12 was responding to to a medical call when it was struck by a silver SUV at the intersection of Myrtle and Filbert. Many of the details of the accident are under investigation, but it is clear that the wreck was violent enough to roll the engine on to it’s side and cause major damage to the SUV. [ more ]       Tweet   2 BEIRUT (LEBANON, MIDDLE EAST) FIREFIGHTERS LODD-FLASHOVER  Tuesday, April 28, 2015   We regret to pass on to you that two young Firefighters - a newlywed whose wife had just announced her pregnancy, and another who was preparing for his wedding - were discovered dead this morning after operating at a huge commercial fire overnight in Beirut's Mar Elias district. The fallen Firefighters are Mohammad al-Mawla, 25, who was married three months ago, and Adel Saadeh, 28, who was preparing for his wedding. Yesterday was Mawla’s wife told him that they were going to have a baby. Firefighters from the Beirut Fire Department responded more than three hours after Civil Defense teams failed to contain the fire that broke out around 8:30 p.m. Monday at a printing press in the basement of the Al-Turk building. Early reports are that FF Mawla was caught in a flashover and was unable to escape. When FF Saadeh attempted to rescue Mawla, he also died from asphyxiation due to the flashover conditions. [ more ]       Tweet   MEDAVAC LODD - FALL FROM COPTER - TEXAS  NewsInc.Com Video  Tuesday, April 28, 2015   A nurse attempting a rescue from a STARFlight medical helicopter fell to her death over Austin’s Barton Creek Greenbelt late Monday. Kristin McLain, a 46-year-old registered nurse who had worked on the STARFlight team for seven years, fell from the helicopter’s hoist during the rescue attempt, officials said. At about 9:50 p.m., the STARFlight EC-145 was on a search-and-rescue mission for a woman who was injured when she fell in the Barton Creek Greenbelt near the 2600 block of Barton Hills Drive. The greenbelt, which runs southwest from Zilker Park, is popular for hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Medical emergencies related to those activities are not uncommon there. The helicopter crew had located the injured woman and was helping to lift her to safety with the helicopter’s hoist when McLain fell, said STARFlight program director Casey Ping in a news briefing early Tuesday morning.       Tweet   FF INJURED IN BATAVIA CANDLE FACTORY FIRE  Sunday, April 26, 2015   A firefighter was injured while battling a serious blaze Saturday night at a west suburban candle manufacturing business.An automatic fire alarm went off at about 6:55 p.m. at Candle Corporation of America, 601 Kingsland Drive, according to a statement from the Batavia Fire Department. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke in the manufacturing area, the fire department said. It was difficult to extinguish the blaze right away because of the long distance from the outside to the “seat of the fire,” as well as layout of large equipment and zero visibility conditions, the fire department said. The fire was extinguished about a half-hour later. Part of the roof collapsed, and the building has been significantly damaged, the fire department said.
