Chicago as Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein Might Have Mapped It

If you missed the Art Institute of Chicago's big Roy Lichtensteinexhibition a few years ago, here's your opportunity to take a look at a map of the Windy City as the famed pop artist might have drawn it. In a new project from Katie Kowalsky of the University of Wisconsin's Cartography Lab, the entire world has been rendered in a way that borrows from Roy Lichtenstein's comic book inspired pop art. Highlighted by CityLab and our colleagues at Curbed LA, the colorful, interactive map offers various levels of detail and contrast. Zoom out to see a city of bold lines and names. Zoom in to get a closer look at parks, buildings and landmarks in a way that Lichtenstein might have envisioned painting them in map form.

WRIGHT STUFF

Bedroom Wing of Frank Lloyd Wright's Coonley Estate Sells

coonley-bedroom-wing-2.jpg
After a few years of listings and re-listings, nearly six years of vacancy, and decades of weather damage and disrepair, the south wing, or "bedroom wing," of Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Coonley House in Riverside has sold for $355,000 to a buyer planning on a full, authentic restoration of the 105-year-old Prairie Style home. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 300 Scottswood Road was originally the guest wing of the larger Coonley House—also known as the Coonley Estate—which was divided into four separate residences in the 1950s. The other three wings are currently occupied and cared-for (with immaculate north wing recently listing for $2.1 million), while the bedroom wing needs some serious work to restore it to its former glory. It has a hole in the roof and clogged gutters have been forcing water into the home's interior, causing water damage and minor floor buckling. Additionally, this past winter, an unknown group of revelers broke in through one of the home's original stained glass windows and partied in the basement, leaving some wreckage and vandalism in their wake.

LOFTY LIVING

Two Bed Loft in Former Cracker Jack Toy Factory Asks $550K

While this building stopped producing toys for the famous Cracker Jack snack company years ago, it now hosts a collection of nice lofts. And for $550,000 this 2,000 square foot two bedroom, two bathroom loft can be yours. Similar to other units in the old Common Sense Novelty Company factory, this loft sports timber ceilings, exposed brick walls, tall windows, skylights and a wood-burning fireplace. This unit has been updated recently, with refinished hardwood floors, new kitchen cabinets and a new marble bathroom. While Chicago may have once been known as the candy capital of the world, this sweet piece of Chicago's confectioning history is up for grabs. Go see this loft in person tomorrow afternoon from 1-3 p.m.

How Great is Kickstarter at Remaking the Urban Landscape?

pluspool.jpg
The ability of Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites to turn crazy design concepts into real-world products has been well documented, but a post at PSFK suggests the site's ability to support speculative building projects is also commendable. The article touches on three campaigns: the +Pool in New York, a fully funded plan to place a floating and filtering pool in the East River; the Thames Baths Lido, a now-active proposal to launch a public pool in the Thames River in London; and the PopUP Forest, set to be installed in Times Square next summer. They all sound like great ideas, but does the promise of crowdfunded public works live up to the reality?

New Chinatown Hotel and Public Library Taking Shape

At the six point intersection of CermakArcher and Princeton in Chinatown, a new hotel is close to completion after moving through its construction phases at a glacial pace. Part of the reason for the slow speed was a redesign after permits had been issued, as the building was previously intended to stand at four stories with 72 rooms. However, a design modification added on a fifth floor and brought the total count to 108 hotel rooms. Preliminary review and approval for the larger version of the building occurred last October.

Vince Vaughn Selling River North Town Home He Never Lived In

vaughn-top.jpg
Comedian, actor, Blackhawks superfan and longtime Chicago landlord Vince Vaughn is ditching a River North town home he had been using as a rental property. A few years back, Vaughn was seeking tenants who could cough up the $8,000 per month rent on the 4,063 square foot place, but now he has listed it for $1.475 millionthe Tribune reports. The town home isn't the only Chicago property Vaughn is looking to unload. His three level penthouse at the Palmolive Building has been on the market since last September. Similar to Oprah and Michael Jordan, it appears that Vaughn is looking to completely cut ties with Chicago.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Southport Transit-Oriented Development Moving Forward

A meeting of the West Lakeview Neighbors (WLVN) earlier this week voted 27-18 in support of a new mixed-use, transit-oriented development (TOD) project at 3401-09 N. Southport, and Southport Corridor News has provided the first glimpse at a new, detailed rendering of the project designed by SPACE Architects + Planners. In 2014 developers announced plans to demolish the two buildings directly adjacent to the Brown Line tracks at the Southport CTA stop, currently home to the much-loved Rice Sushi and Galleria Liquors, the latter of which has already signed on as a tenant for the new development. The building will house 33 apartment units, 6 parking spaces, ground-level retail spaces, and also include 4,000 square feet of rooftop greenspace. But most significantly for this project, residents will be disallowed from obtaining parking passes for Zone #383, encouraging reliance on public transportation, which recent data show to be much needed for the Lakeview neighborhood.

Related Midwest to Take Over Huge 62-Acre South Loop Site

In the early 2000s, ex-power broker and current imprisoned felon Antoin "Tony" Rezko of Rezmar, a Chicago-based development firm, announced plans to fully redevelop the mostly vacant, 62-acre South Loop site that runs along the Chicago River north and south of Roosevelt. After various failures to launch the area known as Riverside Park, Rezmar sold the property in 2005 for $131 million to the Luxemborg-based General Mediterranean Holding (GMH), the site's current owner. And now, after a decade of dormancy, Chicago-based developer Related Midwest has announced plans to form a joint venture with GMH to develop the site, Crain's reports.

Michael Jordan's Highland Park Mansion Now Half of Original Asking Price

It's been well over a year since there's been any updates regarding Michael Jordan's 56,000-square-foot mansion in Highland Park. However, the home has just reentered the market with another big price cut and its new $1.145 million price chop brings the asking price down to $14.855 million—its lowest asking price yet. It's clear that MJ is getting pretty serious about ditching his suburban compound as the home and the seven acres that surround it is now priced at half of the $29 million asking price it had when it first listed over three years ago. While a million dollar reduction is nothing to sneeze at, it's negligible compared to the whopping $8 million price cut the home took in January 2013.

What Do You Want to See Replace the Vienna Beef Factory?

The busy DamenElston and Fullerton intersection is pretty much a no man's land for pedestrians and cyclists, but the chaotic cluster of traffic lights and vehicle congestion is about to receive a much needed makeover. However, the upcoming makeover could bring forth a large amount of new retail and an equally large number of parking spaces, which some say will make the intersection even worse than it was to begin with. The recently unveiled redevelopment proposal for the six acre Vienna Beef factory on Damen Avenue includes roughly 105,000 square feet of retail and 437 parking spaces. This week, the plan, and the likelihood of getting new big box and chain retailers coming to the intersection has been causing quite a stir on the internet, with the urban planning community becoming its most vocal opponents.
