As noted before, Van Gogh produced a lot of paintings that were dark and not what we consider in "his style" at all
This one of sunflowers gone to seed from 1887 is one of the gloomier ones...also seems more abstract than naturalistic
People of that day and age, when they saw a painting such as this, typically said " This artist is mad (crazy)!!"
