Top 32 depressing songs
Okay let’s face it. We all get depressed or sad at some point during the year. Whether it’s a bad relationship fight, a death or just too much pressure on yourself. The following list are songs that have helped me wallow in my own self pity over the past few years. Music helps us say what we are feeling. These songs knew how I felt.
I’ll tell you why I listen to them, and in some instances the occasion on which I listened to them. Looking back on some of the stuff I’ve been upset about is pretty funny. It’s also good that I can look back and laugh about it. I made a CD with most of these songs on it for my friend Chuck. He is a happy go lucky guy and started listening to them in his car on his way home. He called me afterward and said “Yeah I was all happy driving home and bobbing my head and then at the end of the trip I was all sulking and upset.” So these songs work!
Before I get criticized, or blasted by people saying these aren’t the best depressing songs, I already know that. These are the songs that I listen to. These are my favorites. You are also probably wondering why 32? Why not 25 or 10? Well I had trouble cutting my song list down to 25. (That was the original goal) My sports number growing up was always 32 and that’s the number I was able to whittle the list down to.
So without further interruption here are MY top 32 songs to listen to while being depressed.
32. Blink 182 – What Went Wrong
I know such a shock that I have a Blink 182 song to start this off. Well they are my favorite band of all time so naturally I will listen to a few of their songs when I’m depressed.
I’m sick of always hearing
All the sad songs on the radio
All day it is there to remind an over sensitive guy
That he’s lost and alone, yeah
All the sad songs on the radio
All day it is there to remind an over sensitive guy
That he’s lost and alone, yeah
I hate our favorite restaurant, favorite movie, our favorite show
We would stay up all through the night
We would laugh and get high
And never answer the phone
We would stay up all through the night
We would laugh and get high
And never answer the phone
I can’t forgive
Can’t forget
Can’t give in what went wrong
Cause you said this was right
You fucked up my life
Can’t forget
Can’t give in what went wrong
Cause you said this was right
You fucked up my life
Over sensitive guy? Check.
31. Death Cab For Cutie – I Will Follow You Into The Dark
Afraid of death? This song is all about it. Two lovers dying together beginning their journey after death.
30. The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It
You know that smile that everyone puts on even when they don’t mean it. Everyone has one. Some are more obvious than others. My parents built their house and I have lived there all my life. I certainly would have a difficult time if someone else besides my dad lived there. I also don’t like the thought of someone driving my significant other down streets I’ve lived.
“And someone is playing a game in the house that I grew up in. And someone will drive her around down the same streets that I did.”
29. Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man
We have all fucked up right? Yes. Hurt someone? Yes.
“But it was not your fault but mine. And it was your heart on the line. I really fucked it up this time. Didn’t I, my dear?”
28. Panic At The Disco! – Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off
Yes it’s about to get emo. I saw Panic At The Disco! twice once when they were touring with Fallout Boy and once when they toured with Blink 182. They are great live. This is such sex driven song.
“Is it still me that makes you sweat?
Am I who you think about in bed?
When the lights are dim and your hands are shaking as you’re sliding off your dress?
Then think of what you did
And how I hope to God he was worth it.
When the lights are dim and your heart is racing as your fingers touch his skin.
I’ve got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck
Than any boy you’ll ever meet, sweetie you had me.”
This is just kind of a nice “look at me now” song.
27. Brand New – Jude Law And A Semester Abroad
Okay, so this song doesn’t sound too depressing but it has a lot of meaning behind it. I was going through an awful time in my life. The girl I was dating was leaving for Spain to study abroad and we had decided to end it. Same week I visited one of my best friends and his roommate asked him if he was going to bang this girl again…..problem was… that girl was my ex girlfriend. Long story short without all the details they never did anything. But that didn’t stop me from going home and drinking a whole bottle of wine to myself plus a pint of vodka while listening to this song on repeat. I mean it. On repeat. Looking back now all I can do is laugh and smile at how stupid the situation was.
26. Limp Bizkit – Behind Blue Eyes
A cover of the song originally done by The Who. Limp Bizkit loses his white boy rapping for a depressing anthem. A well done one at that.
“No one knows what it’s like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
And no one knows
What it’s like to be hated
To be fated to telling only lies.”
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
And no one knows
What it’s like to be hated
To be fated to telling only lies.”
We all hate to be hated. Even if we pretend it doesn’t bother us. It does. At least me because I care what mostly everyone thinks.
25. Kansas – Dust In The Wind
Does anything we do really matter? It doesn’t seem like it with this classic song.
“I close my eyes Only for a moment and the moment’s gone All my dreams Pass before my eyes with curiosity
Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see”
Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see”
24. Eminem – Beautiful
I used to just listen to this song for the beginning for Paul Rodger’s Reaching Out lyrics. They fit so perfectly into what Eminem is trying to express.
I’m just so fuckin’ depressed, I just can’t seem to get out this slump
If I could just get over this hump
But I need something to pull me out this dump,
I took my bruises, took my lumps
Fell down and I got right back up
But I need that spark to get psyched back up
In order for me to pick the mic back up
I don’t know how or why or when I ended up in this position I’m in
I’m starting to feel decent again
If I could just get over this hump
But I need something to pull me out this dump,
I took my bruises, took my lumps
Fell down and I got right back up
But I need that spark to get psyched back up
In order for me to pick the mic back up
I don’t know how or why or when I ended up in this position I’m in
I’m starting to feel decent again
A lot of us wonder how we get so depressed and how we get in the position that we are in. Looks like Eminem is one of us.
23. System Of A Down – Lonely Day
I absolutely hate being alone when I’m feeling sad. I’m a people person, so when I’m upset I like to surround myself with my friends. When I can’t this type of song is played. I hate this song too. Just because it reminds me of how lonely someone can be.
Such a lonely day
And it’s mine
The most loneliest day of my life
And it’s mine
The most loneliest day of my life
Such a lonely day
Should be banned
It’s a day that I can’t stand
Should be banned
It’s a day that I can’t stand
22. Simple Plan – Your Love Is A Lie
Thankfully, I’ve never had the feeling of being cheated on. That doesn’t stop me however from having long lengthy break ups where a person that you still have feelings for messes around with someone.
You look so innocent
But the guilt in your voice gives you away
Yeah you know what I mean
How does it feel when you kiss when you know that i trust you
And do you think about me when he fucks you?
But the guilt in your voice gives you away
Yeah you know what I mean
How does it feel when you kiss when you know that i trust you
And do you think about me when he fucks you?
21. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah
This song doesn’t have depressing lyrics but the whole melody and the way Buckley sings it gives me the chills. I’m split right down the middle whether this is an uplifting song or a depressing one. It flip flops for me all the time.
20. My Chemical Romance – I Don’t Love You
And after all this time that you still owe
You’re still the good-for-nothing I don’t know
So take your gloves and get out
Better get out
While you can
You’re still the good-for-nothing I don’t know
So take your gloves and get out
Better get out
While you can
When you go
Would you even turn to say
“I don’t love you
Like I did
Yesterday”
Would you even turn to say
“I don’t love you
Like I did
Yesterday”
Been in a long term relationship and not feeling the same way you used to? This song is for you.
19. Coldplay – Fix You
It’s easy to feel broken but it’s not easy to feel fixed. Coldplay’s slow melody hits it right on the head.
When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
18. Blink 182 – All Of This
Joined by Robert Smith of The Cure Blink 182 puts out a song about being used. Some background to this song…. one of Blink 182’s technicians told them while on tour about a girl named Holly that he liked a lot. She invited him to a party where he showed up at the front door and was hit by water balloons and beer cans by a ton of people. Holly planned it all along.
With all of this I feel now
Everything inside of my heart
It all just seems to be how
Nothing I feel pulls at me at all
Again I wait for this to pull apart
To break my time in two
Another night with her
But I’m always wanting you
Everything inside of my heart
It all just seems to be how
Nothing I feel pulls at me at all
Again I wait for this to pull apart
To break my time in two
Another night with her
But I’m always wanting you
Use me Holly come on and use me
We know where we go
Use me Holly come on and use me
We go where we know
We know where we go
Use me Holly come on and use me
We go where we know
17. Korn – Kiss
There isn’t a line in this song that I don’t like. Everything in it feels like the end of a relationship. This is by far one of Korn’s slower songs.
Why can’t this kiss be true? Why won’t you please let me through? I don’t understand Why you always push me away
Well, last thing I would like to do before I go away Is cry there next to you, next to you Cry and talk about the good old days and where they’ve gone And now how much I hate you
Well, last thing I would like to do before I go away Is cry there next to you, next to you Cry and talk about the good old days and where they’ve gone And now how much I hate you
16. Black Label Society – In This River
Okay, this music video is a bit funny. But I love this song….but for the wrong reason. For the longest time I was singing this song wrong. I thought the chorus was “In this river our salvation ends.” I learned a few weeks ago that it’s actually…..
In this river all shall fade to black
In this river ain’t no coming back
In this river all shall fade to black
Ain’t no coming back
In this river ain’t no coming back
In this river all shall fade to black
Ain’t no coming back
Withdrawn I step away
Just to find myself
The door is closed again
The only one left
This storm that’s broken me
My only friend
Just to find myself
The door is closed again
The only one left
This storm that’s broken me
My only friend
Great song either way.
15. Ozzy Osbourne – Close My Eyes Forever
Ozzy teams up with Lita Ford for a ballad. I know I have felt before like closing my eyes and making everything disappearing.
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?
Sometimes
It’s hard to hold on
So hard to hold on to my dreams
It isn’t always what it seems
When you’re face to face with me
It’s hard to hold on
So hard to hold on to my dreams
It isn’t always what it seems
When you’re face to face with me
14. Grandaddy – Underneath The Weeping Willow
Somebody’s final resting place.
I want to sleep
Underneath the weeping willow
As it crys all night quietly
Its tears all around me
I’ll sleep there so soundly
Until I’m allowed finally
To wake and be happy again
Underneath the weeping willow
As it crys all night quietly
Its tears all around me
I’ll sleep there so soundly
Until I’m allowed finally
To wake and be happy again
13. Blue October – Say It
We all have that feeling. Waiting for a text to come that we don’t want. The one that says we need to talk or this isn’t going to work out. That waiting game sucks. But this song explains it.
I don’t wanna hear you say it
I don’t wanna hear you say it
I don’t wanna hear you say it
Now you’re messing with my pride
I don’t wanna hear you say it
I don’t wanna hear you say it
Now you’re messing with my pride
Well, I’m sick of standing in your line
So now you’ll have to take it
Take this to heart
I will never let you fuck me over
Stop talking down to me your war is old
Your game is over
So here’s my coldest shoulder
So now you’ll have to take it
Take this to heart
I will never let you fuck me over
Stop talking down to me your war is old
Your game is over
So here’s my coldest shoulder
12. The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight
This is such a powerful song. It fits exactly what a depressing drunken night would be at the bar if you saw your ex.
As you stand
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song about forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack to her smile
And that white dress she’s wearing, you haven’t seen her
For a while
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song about forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack to her smile
And that white dress she’s wearing, you haven’t seen her
For a while
But you know
That she’s watching
She’s laughing, she’s turning
She’s holding her tonic like a cross
The room suddenly spinning, she walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms
That she’s watching
She’s laughing, she’s turning
She’s holding her tonic like a cross
The room suddenly spinning, she walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms
11. Boxcar Racer – There Is
i’ve given a lot of thought to the nights we use to have
the days have come and gone
our lives went by so fast
i faintly remember breathing on your bedroom floor
where i laid and told you but you swear you loved me more
the days have come and gone
our lives went by so fast
i faintly remember breathing on your bedroom floor
where i laid and told you but you swear you loved me more
do you care if i don’t know what to say?
will you sleep tonight, will you think of me
will i shake this off pretend it’s all okay
that there’s someone out there who feels just like me
there is
will you sleep tonight, will you think of me
will i shake this off pretend it’s all okay
that there’s someone out there who feels just like me
there is
This is by far Tom Delonge’s best song outside of anything Blink 182. I used to wonder if I was the only one that felt the way I did. Thanks to this song, I now know I’m not alone.
10. Slipknot – Vermillion Part 1 and 2
Just can’t bare to let that loved one go? Was she your everything?
She is everything and more
The solemn hypnotic
My Dahlia bathed in possession
She is home to me
She is everything and more
The solemn hypnotic
My Dahlia bathed in possession
She is home to me
I get nervous, perverse, when I see her it’s worse
But the stress is astounding
It’s now or never she’s coming home
Forever
But the stress is astounding
It’s now or never she’s coming home
Forever
9. Brand New – Sowing Season
A mellow song that quickly becomes intense when the chorus hits. The line “I’m just a man that knows how to feel” says it all.
I am not your friend.
I am just a man who knows how to feel.
I am just a man who knows how to feel.
I am not your friend.
I’m not your lover.
I’m not your family.
I’m not your lover.
I’m not your family.
8. Rehab – It Don’t Matter
A true song about the struggles of depression. I know I’ve felt like everything is beautiful as long as I’m not there.
Everything’s beautiful as long as I ain’t there
I guess I wasn’t meant to crack a smile who cares
I think I’ll go to sleep for a while now
I guess I wasn’t meant to crack a smile who cares
I think I’ll go to sleep for a while now
I’m barely livin’ in my skin depression’s my only friend
And I don’t know where I am heading tryin’ to forget where I’ve been
And I’m so sick of lying God please show me that silver lining
And I don’t know where I am heading tryin’ to forget where I’ve been
And I’m so sick of lying God please show me that silver lining
7. Radiohead – Creep
I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I’m not around
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I’m not around
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special
Who doesn’t want a perfect body? Everyone wants to be noticed when they aren’t around.
6. Gary Jules – Mad World
The world doesn’t make sense. Gary Jules knows this.
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very mad world mad world
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very mad world mad world
5. Fleetwood Mac – Landslide
The live version is way better. We are all given challenges. Can we face them?
Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
And can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Oh oh I don’t know, oh I don’t know
Can the child within my heart rise above?
And can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Oh oh I don’t know, oh I don’t know
4. Neil Young – My My Hey Hey
“It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” This song was so powerful that one of music’s greatest influences Kurt Cobain included that line in his suicide letter.
3. Johnny Cash – Hurt
The greatest cover song ever. These beautiful lyrics were actually written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. A complete confession to being a piece of shit your whole life. If you hurt people maybe this is your song. I know I’ve listened to it more than a few times.
2. Eminem – Kim
An absolute brutally honest song. I don’t see how anyone could write these lyrics and perform them even if they are feeling them. It’s not Eminem rapping. It’s him screaming and screaming at his wife. He murders her in the end. A chilling song that gives me goosebumps and not the good kind. A song truly formed from homicidal thoughts and depression. I won’t even post the lyrics.
1. Metallica – Fade To Black
Don’t feel like yourself anymore? Growing tired of everything? The ultimate suicide anthem.
Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Well that’s my list for my favorite songs to listen to when I’m upset. If you have any suggestions on what to listen to next time I get upset just write a comment! Other than that I hope you have a good day and don’t need to listen to these songs!
