One of 11 selected Syrian children to be treated in Prague
Others will go to the United States instead for treatment
Prague, Sept 19 (ČTK) — Only one of the 11 Syrian children, whom the Czech Republic has offered treatment and asylum for their families, will be operated in Prague, while the parents of the others have rejected the offer and prefer the US, Právo writes today, referring to Interior Minister Milan Chovanec.
Chovanec (Social Democrats ČSSD) confirmed that the other parents had preferred an offer by the U.N. high commissioner for treatment in the United States.
"So far only one Syrian child with acute heart disease will arrive in Prague to be operated soon. The UN high commissioner allegedly promised the others that they would leave for the USA to be treated there. They do not want to go to the Czech Republic so far," Chovanec told Právo.
According to the paper's information, a team of Czech doctors and security forces staff chose other children after the ten Syrian families refused the offer. Another six children suffering from heart troubles with their families should arrive in Prague in October, Právo says.
"The situation is changing any moment. At present a total of seven kids should come, 33 persons in total. One child with acute heart failure should arrive earlier," Prague-Motol Teaching Hospital director Miloslav Miloslav Ludvík told Právo.
The hospital is prepared for the treatment of the seven children, he said.
"However, we are not sure that the remaining six will also arrive. They may change their mind," Ludvík added.
After the arrival in Prague, the Refugee Facilities Authority and the Prague Diocesan Charity will provide integration assistance for the families of the Syrian children.
They will be temporarily accommodated in a facility in Prague and will be entitled to thorough health care, language courses, social and legal assistance as well as interpretation and other services, Gabriela Vankova, from the Interior Ministry's press section, told Právo.
