A few weekends ago our LFB Fire Cadets were joined at Croydon fire station by cadets from the Metropolitan Police and St John’s Ambulance for the first ever Emergency Services Day.
The cadets put what they had learnt to use by teaching the other young people the skills they have learnt on their respective programmes. These were then put to the test as part of two simulated incidents.

  • Alan Jacobs I started in a Fire Cadet program in Secondary school for four years. I then continued to attend the fire academy and EMT school. Currently working as a Firefighter/ EMT in the USA and planning on heading to medic school to advance my skills soon! Keep up the good work Cadets!

We remember the seven people who died and the 139 people injured at the Southall rail crash, which happened on this day in 1997. 
Our thoughts are also with the firefighters who worked to free those trapped in the wreckage.

  • Alan Worthington I managed to get on the footbridge just after the crash not nice. I looked at the position of the 2 trains and said to the policeman on there that the 125 was in the wrong as the freight would not have been allowed to cross. The inquiry found that the 125 did not obey a warning signal

We’re opening the doors for today only as part of Open House London and will be offering the chance to look around rarely seen areas of the building. Exhibits include vintage fire engines and firefighter equipment and old Brigade uniforms.

Seventy-five years ago today, Auxiliary fireman Harry Errington carried out a remarkable act of bravery which led to him being the only firefighter to receive the George Cross during WW2.
Just before midnight, a bomb virtually demolished a three-storey garage, the basement of which was used as an air raid shelter by Auxiliary Fire Service personnel. The floors caved in and 20 people, including six firemen were killed outright.
