After heat wave, rain on the way to Southern California
After enduring nearly a week of extreme heat, Southern California is now expecting rain beginning Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, a storm could produce more than an inch of rain in some mountain areas, less in the L.A. basin.
Mudflows in burn areas and flooding in low-lying areas are possible. There's a 20% chance of showers in some areas Saturday, including Santa Barbara.
3.3 aftershock follows earlier earthquake in Mendocino National Forest
A shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported Saturday morning 22 miles from Rancho Tehama Reserve, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 6:41 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 2.5 miles.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 37 miles from Red Bluff, Calif., 48 miles from Chico and 50 miles from Ukiah.
3.4 earthquake strikes near Rancho Tehama Reserve, Calif.
A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported Saturday morning 22 miles from Rancho Tehama Reserve, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 6:11 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 2.5 miles.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 36 miles from Red Bluff, Calif., 48 miles from Chico and 51 miles from Ukia.
Another quake centered nearby struck less than two weeks ago.
Second ex-employee of Jewish center in La Jolla sentenced for embezzlement
A second ex-employee of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla was sentenced Friday to a year in jail for embezzling from the center.
Tamara Azizov, 62, formerly an accounts clerk, embezzled $154,192 by using center credit cards, according to documents in San Diego federal court. She allegedly falsified records to indicate the purchases were legitimate.
Instead she used the money for jewelry and designer clothing, Tom Ford sunglasses, Simone Perele lingerie and sushi meals at Zip Fusion, prosecutors said.
Special-needs student found dead on empty school bus
A 19-year-old special needs student at the Sierra Education Center was found unresponsive and alone on a school bus parked at a depot in Whittier on Friday.
Police arrived at about 4:23 p.m. to find several bus drivers attempting CPR on the young man. The officers took over the lifesaving effort, without success. The young man, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead by firefighters about 10 minutes after the police arrived.
L.A. County social worker is accused of lying about acid attack
A Los Angeles County social worker who said she was accosted by strangers who threw acid on her has been charged with filing a false police report.
Mary Quinones, who works for the county Department of Children and Family Services, said an unidentified man and woman approached her in the parking lot of the agency's Santa Fe Springs office Aug. 19. They asked if she was a social worker, then threw the acid or some other caustic substance on her arms, she said.
Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Fontana
A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Friday evening four miles from Fontana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 8:29 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 6.8 miles.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was six miles from Rialto, seven miles from Rancho Cucamonga and seven miles from Bloomington.
In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
