The following are the comments that accompanied the video: This vehicle accident should serve as a reminder that anything can happen, regardless of how good the chauffeur (fire apparatus operator/driver) is behind the wheel. You can either skip ahead to about the 5:00 mark to view the point of impact or watch it in its entirety, taking every opportunity to learn and discuss all that is available. The latter of the two is obviously recommended. Rest assured that while there are many videos of accidents involving fire apparatus out there, you haven't seen anything from this perspective. It should be noted that, thankfully, the three parties involved (the two in the rig as well as the driver in the passenger vehicle) did not suffer from any life threatening injuries. [ more ]         APPARATUS CRASH IN OHIO Thursday, September 3, 2015   At least one person was injured Thursday morning when a fire truck and another vehicle collided.The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. on Groveport Road east of Lithopolis Road. Chief Deputy Jim Gilbert said the fire engine was responding to a gas leak in the area, and had its lights and sirens on. A silver car headed toward the truck has stopped. A blue SUV behind the silver car did not stop in time, went left of center to avoid the silver car, and struck the fire truck head on. A fire lieutenant riding in the passenger seat hurt his back and was transported to the hospital. He has been released. Two people in the SUV were also taken to the hospital with precautionary injuries. Madison Township Fire Chief Robert Bates said the firefighters involved in the crash got out of the mangled truck and helped tend to the injured people in their truck and both vehicles. Thursday, September 3, 2015   A few years ago we had a discussion with some industry folks about the idea of a smoke and CO detector the size of a key chain. Attach it to book bags, hand bags, car keys, backpacks, suitcases-whatever-the idea was truly personal "always on the job" protection....especially when people are unknowingly in areas that lacked it. When I was sent this article today, I was THRILLED because people are thinking about fire survival. Check this out...a new patent granted to Apple hinting that the company plans to include a smoke detector in the iPhone, iPad and other other iDevices. Whoa. WHOA! A smoke alarm built in portable devices such as smartphones and tablets is a great and needed idea. Apple's plan to add a smoke detector to its iDevices can protect people WHEREVER they are. The below report explains that a small smoke detection sensor will be installed in an iDevice, which will be similar to the ones found in normal smoke detectors. [ more ]   FIREFIGHTER RESPONDS ON AN EMS CALL, ARRIVES/PARKS AT WRONG HOUSE, FACES GUNFIRE Thursday, September 3, 2015   A Bernice (Louisiana) Fire Department firefighter responding to a medical emergency was faced with gunfire after arriving at the wrong address on August 7th. Union Parish Sheriff's detectives arrested 75-year-old John C. Bowen after an investigation into the incident. Detectives say the volunteer firefighter responded in her own vehicle and parked at the end of Bowen's driveway while waiting for other firefighters to arrive. She realized she was at the wrong address, but not before Bowen allegedly began walking toward her and firing shots into the ground or the air. The victim also reported that Bowen allegedly kept the beam of his flashlight in her eyes during the incident, and that she repeatedly shouted she was with the fire department. Detectives said Bowen called 911 about 10 minutes later reporting that someone tried to rob him. He admitted to firing shots, but he stated that he was on his ownproperty and could shoot anytime he wanted. UPSO arrest... [ more ]         IT'S NEVER TOO LATE. EVER. Thursday, September 3, 2015   As 9-11-2015 approaches-we remember it as the anniversary of the attacks and murders of thousands of Americans. But for the purpose of what WE do, as Firefighters, the 343+ members of the FDNY are the ones we especially focus on. Things look very different today......and with so many 9/11 CANCER ILLNESSES AND DEATHS, the attacks very much continue. While many Firefighters HAVE made a serious effort to make sure that the USA, Canada and others DO NOT forget-others have done little. While many communities HAVE memorials dedicated to those lost on 9-11-01, so many more do not. [ more ]         HUH - THE NEW SEAT BELT ALARM IS TOO LOUD? REALLY? Wednesday, September 2, 2015  Ten brand new fire trucks have been a source of pride for the city of Detroit. But one firefighter pointed out an alarming imperfection in one of the new rigs and the administration didn't like it.Firefighters simply call it retaliation after the city took it away. Detroit firefighter Mike O'Lear was stunned by the reaction or retaliation as he calls it, following a letter he fired off to the city last week. In part, he expressed his concerns about the seatbelt alarms in the new rigs - he claims they were so loud and excessive that firefighters could miss vital information transmitted over the radio. In it he wrote that as a "proud member of the Detroit Fire Department" his hope and resolve was to have the situation rectified because due to the department's workload, they "should be on the forefront of apparatus designs." But the Indiana man's family continues to wait for an answer from the federal government about whether they will or won't get a one-time death benefit meant to help the survivors of fallen public safety officers. Hundreds of families have waited for a year — and sometimes several years — for action from the Public Safety Officers' Benefits Programs set up in 1976 to help out families of police, firefighters and other emergency workers who die in the line of duty or after severely stressful events on the job. ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE: more ]         FIREFIGHTER STABBED BY PSYCHO PATIENT IN HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM KTLA Credit Wednesday, September 2, 2015  A Firefighter with the Los Angeles Fire Department was stabbed by a patient at White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights on Tuesday night. The stabbing occurred around 2130 in the hospital emergency room, according to Officer Mike Lopez with the Los Angeles Police Department. The patient was in the emergency room on a mental health hold, Lopez said. He allegedly pulled a knife out of his sock, stabbed the firefighter and threatened other hospital staff members before being tackled by security guards, according to Lopez. The firefighter was in stable condition with a non life-threatening wound to his arm, fire officials stated. The unidentified patient was in custody and was expected to be booked on suspicion of attempted murder, according to Lopez.         BAD GUY AIMS GUN AT PARAMEDICS. BAD GUY GOES TO JAIL. BAD GUY Tuesday, September 1, 2015   Amarillo SWAT arrested an Amarillo man on an aggravated assault charge late Monday after an over four-hour standoff in the 4100 block of South Monroe Street, police said.The incident began at 6:38 p.m., when two paramedics responded to a call at the home, where someone had reportedly suffered a fall and required medical attention, Amarillo Police Sgt. Brent Barbee said Tuesday. Paramedics entered the home and found Timothy Carl McFaul, 56, who had fallen. McFaul was brandishing a long rifle and pointing it at paramedics, Barbee said. The paramedics left the home, taking a female who was inside the home with them. Amarillo police restricted access to the block, and brought in SWAT and negotiators. Officers tried to contact McFaul without success. The suspect also didn’t respond to efforts to contact him through a public address system from a vehicle or by telephone, police said. [ more ]         ARSONIST BLAMED FOR FF INJURY IN TN Tuesday, September 1, 2015  Police are searching for an arsonist who is ultimately to blame for injuring two Memphis firefighters.Investigators said the arsonist set fire to a house in the 1600 block of Preston Street on Monday afternoon. While putting the fire out, one firefighter suffered first-degree burns. He went to the hospital in non-critical condition. Another firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion. The 14-year-veteran of the force and married father of two was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the leg. His bullet proof vest caught the bullet to the chest. "Thank God for the vest," Hanly asid. The other bullet while hitting his leg, missed vital organs and his bone. "To get hit twice and 12 hours later to be able to stand here, someone was looking out for me," Hanly said. Police identify the shooting suspect as Darrel Burt. The call came out just after 1:00 a.m. Sunday for a suicidal man inside a Norwood apartment complex in the 600 block of Mohawk. Hanly and his partner tried talking to the suspect. [ more ]         ST PAUL FIREFIGHTER DIES IN QUARTERS Tuesday, September 1, 2015   A St. Paul firefighter died Monday after he fell ill and collapsed while on duty.Shane Clifton, a 38-year-old firefighter and paramedic, was working at Fire Station No. 14, 111 Snelling Av. N., when he collapsed, according to fire officials. His colleagues immediately began treatment and while rushing him to Regions Hospital. The staff there worked several hours to save his life, St. Paul fire officials said. Clifton was a U.S. Navy veteran who was named Command Sailor of the Year for 2001 aboard the USS Curtis Wilbur. He worked as an emergency department technician for Unity Hospital in Fridley, and Allina EMS, before joining the St. Paul Fire Department on October 1, 2007. This is the 63rd St. Paul firefighter to die in the line of duty and the first since Ray Hain died in 2009.   MAX FIRE BOX What?
