Most officers have cases that stick with them, and many involve children. For retired Pittsburgh homicide detective Ron Freeman, it's the case of 1-year-old Jaray Hibbler, killed by his father in 1993 and buried in a shallow grave. "One of the female homicide detectives...opened up the blanket, so you could see the baby's face. It looked like a little angel lying there," Freeman said. "Every detective there--they were all experienced homicide detectives, and they all had seen a lot--not one wasn't crying."

Kent’s FD CARES program (CARES stands for Community Assistance, Referrals and Education Services) aims to get chronic users of 9-1-1 and other local emergency services to use those services less. It does this by helping them meet their nonemergency and low-acuity needs through more appropriate means. The EMT-level program is data-driven and designed for replicability. www.emsworld.com/12099481

The tendency of the new paramedic to focus on ALS assessments and interventions at the expense of neglecting BLS can be mitigated by a strong EMT partner. The more you empower your partners by valuing their experience and seeking their input, the less likely you will be to make those mistakes.
What can a new paramedic learn from an EMT?

From the EMS World Archives: Assessing the pediatric patient can be one of the most challenging and stressful tasks for prehospital providers. Pediatric education is very limited in most EMS curricula, and critical pediatric patients make up barely 1% of run volume in most EMS systems. Through the use of an observational assessment and application of age-appropriate assessment techniques, we can substantially decrease the difficulty in assessing our pediatric patients.

A picturesque farm became the scene of four dramatic rescue scenarios Saturday morning: A man was impaled by a heavy branch while building a tree house; a boy was run over by a tractor-trailer; a man was struck by lightning atop a barn roof; another was attacked by a swarm of bees. Horses scattered as a MedLink helicopter landed on a field. www.emsworld.com/12113700
