VF&RS Recruiters paid a visit to Watcom County Fire District 5 this evening (Point Roberts, Washington) and were given a tour by Fire Chief Christopher Carleton and Assistant Chief John Shields.
It might seem strange that Vancouver recruiters are travelling to the United States to meet with potential recruit candidates but in Fact, WCFD5 counts a great many Canadian men and women in its number. Alongside their colleagues who live in Point Roberts, Canadian members of the dep...

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services is using resources from all its divisions to enhance the safety of Vancouver parks and park users. Suppression and Wildlands teams are in the green spaces making sure access routes are clear and helping to inform users that fires, smoking and charcoal briquettes are not allowed. Our Prevention Division has committed Fire Prevention Officers from the newly formed Bike Team to patrol parks monitoring for potential situations and engaging guests about our smoking and fire bylaws.
With the fire potential so high, it's critical that we work together with out partner agencies and the public to avoid a completely preventable fire in any of the City's green spaces.

  • Brad Park Waste of my municipal tax dollars. Sounds like VFD saw that the other emergency services had bikes and figured all those spare tax dollars could buy some nice gear. We have Municipal Bylaw enforcement to deal with smokers. Just another example of VFD creating work where none is needed and using the public purse as a piggy bank.
  • Holl See I think it's a fantastic idea. You can cover ground much better on 2 wheels in Stanley Park and all of the other parks also.
Yesterday, along with one of our media partners, VF&RS demonstrated how quickly an errant cigarette could ignite the dry vegetation that is everywhere in Vancouver right now. It took no more than a lit cigarette tossed into dry grass to almost instantly start a fire.
Not only was the fire almost instant, but the rate at which it spread was astonishing: in just under a minute, the fire had spread over 4 meters and was gaining momentum as the leading edge grew in size.
Before...

However, the majority of medical calls do not require fire fighters on top of 2-4 paramedics.

We had a lot of fun joining in the Vancouver Canada Day parade on a lovely sunny evening. The weather was great, the crowds were fantastic - what a celebration! Apparatus taking part included a Medic, Engine and one of our Ladders - they made their presence felt with careful use lights and sirens to the joy of the crowd.
14 of our Youth Academy graduates, proudly sporting some very VF&RS Canada Day shirts, walked alongside our vehicles to hand out stickers to the bystanders and carry our national flag. As always, these young men and women represented the Youth Academy and VF&RS as a whole, magnificently.
Leading our contingent were 3 of our Assistant Chiefs who decided to capture the moment with a quick selfie. "Now, which button do I press ... ?"

Remember that the sale and use of fireworks within the City of Vancouver are both prohibited under City of Vancouver Fire Bylaw without a permit. Not only are they associated with thermal injuries, but present a huge ignition risk to our surroundings in this hot, dry weather.

  • Wayne Oudijn However, you have absolutely no way to control fireworks in Vancouver because of your City Council's head in the sand attitude.
When the weather is hot and dry like this, it's important to remember to keep ALL possible ignition sources away from grass, brush, bushes, and vegetation. This includes the hot exhaust from generators and other motors, heat from compressors and most importantly discarded cigarettes. Please use appropriate disposal containers. An errant cigarette butt in even a planter can quickly cause a fire that could spread to surrounding structures. Please help us keep our city and our green spaces safe.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services has taken Rapid Intervention Team training to the next level. Over the past month, VF&RS' Training Division identified staff from our Heavy Rescue Program across all four shifts to undergo four days of intensive RIT training. RITs are teams who are ready to rescue downed Fire Fighters from inside hazardous environments such as structure fires. They are trained to gain access when primary means are compromised, provide aid such as supplementa...

Today in 1886, June 13th, the Great Fire swept through Vancouver killing many residents and leaving many more homeless and without possessions. This new settlement on Canada's Pacific was devastated by the flames that were fanned by high winds from the west. The bucket brigade never stood a chance.
Vancouverites are nothing if not resilient, and soon after the smoke had cleared, so was the debris of the burned out buildings and construction began again. Never again would the ...
